BRITISH TALKS WITH U.S.
STATEMENT BY MR
CORDELL HULL
(Received September 22. 7 p.m.)
LONDON, September 20
A Washington report says that the United States Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull) said he had discussed with Mr R. G. Casey, the Australian Minister, and Lord Lothian, the British Ambassador, during recent talks the question of the joint use of Singapore, but he emphasised that Singapore was only mentioned casually, among many other subjects, in a broad exchange of information. He said that the purpose of the talks was a full exchange of views of the respective nations on the international situation, not with a view to negotiations. _ , It is noted here, says a British Official Wireless message that Mr Hull has dealt faithfully with speculation.
DESTROYERS FROM
UNITED STATES
SIX FOR CANADIAN
NAVY
LONDON, September 20,
Six of the American destroyers sold to Britain are being taken into the Canadian Navy and will be manned by Canadians. They have already arrived at Canadian ports. Twenty-five Canadian naval officers have arrived in England for training. The village of Churchill, In England, has sent a message to the town of the same name in the United States expressing gratification that the name had been chosen for the leader of the fleet of destroyers recently transferred from the United States to Great Britain. The transfer, said the message, would draw the two nations closer together. and the vessel named jointly after the towns in England and the United States would be an instrument in delivering the world from Nazi thraldom. ■. -—■
