STANDARDISATION OF PACKING

Fruitgrowers’ Protest

A letter was received by the ■ Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association from the Central Otago Fruit Growers’ Association, at a meeting on Saturday evening, asking for support against the enforcement of stan--dardised packing of stone fruit. Mr C. E. Pope presided. It was decided to write advising that the matter should be referred to the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin). In reporting on the conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation the Canterbury delegates, Messrs H. R. Sampson and B. T. Turner, said that the packing of cherries in three grades, in layers, would mean an additional 25 per cent, on the cost. It was stated that no reply had been received from the Price Tribunal to a letter sent by the association asking how tomato and stone fruitgrowers were to regain the increased costs caused by the increase of approximately 16 per cent, allowed by the tribunal on the prices of packing cases.
