PATRIOTIC CONCERT
PROGRAMME BY STUDENTS
The programme in the patriotic concert held in the Civic Theatre last evening was given by university students.
The University Orchestral Society’s orchestra, conducted by Miss Freda Marsden, opened the programme with "London Suite,” by Coates. This was followed by “Invictus” and “Shor’ten In’ Bread,” sung by Mr H. W. Robinson, and three songs by Elgar “The Sweepers,” "Fate’s Discourtesy.” and “The Lowestoft Boat,” sung by the university choir, conducted by Dr. J. C. Bradshaw. The rest of the programme consisted of a Javanese song and dance by Mr T. Schoon, a gymnastic display, and a play, “The Stepmother,” by Arnold Bennett, presented by the Drama Society.
U.S. Ships for Britain.—American columnists state that Mr Roosevelt is expected to approve the sale to Britain of 30 freighters between 8000 and 10,000 tons, which are tied up at Virginia, at a cost of 8,000,000 dollars, plus 5,000.000 dollars for repairs.—New York. September 20.
