TIMARU HARBOUR
DECLINE IN REVENUE REPORTED
A return of trade and revenue for 11 months ended on August 31, 1940, which was submitted to the monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board, recorded a fall in receipts of £4282, compared with the corresponding period of last year. The figure this year was £25,845 and last year £30,127. Shipping for the same period totalled 322,504 tons, 450,391 tons last year. Mr F. R. Flatman presided. It was reported that the cost of operating the board’s dredge for the last H months was £19,002. The total number of loads raised was 624. The cost a load was £3O 9s, or 7.308 d a ton. Beginning at £46 0s 5d in October, 1939, and rising to £97 4s in the next month, the cost a load was progressively lowered to £2B 18s lOd. The increase in August was accounted for by a number of adjustments at the end of the financial year, including accident insurance premiums, engineer’s salary, and superannuation subsidies. Mr W. H. Hall reported that in company with the engineer (Mr B. W. Charman) he had attended a meeting to discuss the problem of erosion at Dashing Rocks. No progress had been made and the meeting closed when representatives of the Public Works Department, Timaru Borough Council, and the board indicated that they would accept no responsibility. The matter would remain in abeyance till further action was taken by the property owners concerned.
