STOP PRESS ♦ BASES FOR U.S. IN DOMINIONS NEW YORK, September 19. Tlie Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says that British Empire and the United States representatives are conferring on the possibility of closer co-operation among Eng-lish-speaking peoples throughout the world, particularly in the joint use of naval and air bases for mutual defence. The British. Ambassador (Lord Lothian), the United States Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull), and the Australian Minister (Mr R. G. Casey) are participating in conversations, chiefly about the use of Australian, New Zealand, and South African bases by the United States. The United States, it is stated, has adopted a policy of keeping enemies far from its coasts. Thus bases in Australia, South Africa, and at Singapore would obviously be most valuable.
