HOME GUARD
FIRST MEETING OF " COMMITTEE The Christchurch committee of the Home Guard held its first meeting at the City Council Chamber last evening. Oh the motion of Cr. M. E. Lyons the business was done in committee. “I don’t think we can do the job we should do if this meeting is reported,” Cr, Lyons said. “A report can be supplied afterwards if necessary.” Before going into committee the meeting elected Cr. H. E. Denton chairman. Cr. Denton said that the City Council representatives had met MajorGeneral R. Young, commanding officer cf the Home Guard. They had talked with him for an hour and a half, but they did not learn a great deal from him. The thing was just in its infancy. In answer to a Question from Mr D. W. Russell, Cr. Denton said that the appointment of district and area leaders was the prerogative of the officer commanding. Major-General Young had mentioned two names in confidence. i
Members of the Christchurch committee of the Home Guard are: Crs. H. E. Denton and M. E, Lyons (City Council), the Chief City Inspector (Mr J. W. Huggins), the Town Clerk (Mr H. S, Feast), Messrs A. B. Grant (Federation of Labour), D. W. Russell (Returned Soldiers” Association), and C. H. Taylor, jun. (Canterbury Employers’ Association). The Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) is an ex-officio member.
