CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS

Weather conditions improved the market for vegetables this week, and most lines have advanced in price, lettuces especially being in keen demand. Ruling values are: Spring cabbages. 3s 6d to 7s 9d a dozen; cauliflowers. 3s to 10s a dozen: lettuces, 2s 0d to 5s 9d a dozen, hothouse up to 7s 4d a dozen; spinach, 3s to 3s a dozen; rhubarb. 5s to Gs 6d a dozen, forced, up to 8s a dozen; radishes, ,1s 6d to 3s a dozen; spring onions, Is 3a to Is 7d a dozen; asparagus, best quality. up to 21s a dozen bundles; potatoes, up to 2s a sugar-bag; onions, 5s to 6s a sugar-bag. „ . . , Fruit —A large shipment of Australian navel oranges arrived early in the week, and after being repacked are moving out freely. Apples—Most varieties are available with the exception of Delicious. These are wanted. New Zealand lemons —Increased supplies are arriving and sales are slowing down owing to warmer weather. New Zealand poormans— The last of these will arrive next week, Eggs—ls 3d to Is 5d a dozen, according to grade.

GROWERS’ REPORT

The Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Growers’ Association supplies the following report on the fruit and vegetable market this week:—Apples: Supplies scarce; Delicious 9s to 11s, French Crabs 7s 6d to Bs, Stunners 7s to 8s 6d. Pears; Winter Coles 13s to 14s a bushel case, 6s to 7s a half case. Celery: Best 6s to 9s a dozen, others 3s to ss, Leeks: Best Is 9d to 3s a dozen, others Is. Beetroot: Is 6d a tin, Carrots and parsnips; 2s a sugarbag. Swedes: Southland 4s to 4s 6d a cental, Lettuce: Prices high for choice; 4s 2d to 5s 9d a dozen, good 3s to 4s, others 2s to 3s. Cabbage. Spring, values hardened towards week-end; best 4s to 5s 8d a dozen, others 2s to 3s 6d. Cauliflowers: Best 5s to 8s a dozen, others Is to 3s. Spinach: 2s 6d to 3s a dozen bunches. Onions: Spring 9d to Is 6d a dozen bundles, 5s to 6s a sugar-bag; seconds 2s to 3s. Potatoes: Is 6d to 2s for Aucklanders, others Is a sugar-bag, Rhubarb: Very firm: best 6s to 7s a dozen bundles, others 4s to 6s. A shipment of oranges which arrived during the week required repacking, but the loss was not so heavy as was expected.

DUNEDIN

DUNEDIN, September 20. Supplies of cauliflowers have increased and prices were easier at the week-end. Spring cabbages are more plentiful. Savoys are offering at low rates. Only poor quality celery is now available. Rhubarb has been in better supply, but prices compare more than favourably with those ruling at this time last year. Carrots, swedes, and parsnips are still selling at low rates. Leeks are selling at lower rates than for many years. , , With the exception cf rhubarb and lettuce practically all vegetables have been selling at prices which cannot show growers any margin of profit.

SALES TAX IN JULY

The amount of sales tax collected during July for ordinary revenue purposes was £313,293, a decrease of £14,189 below the June figure, but an increase of £27.763 above the total for July, 1939. The July, 1940, figure does not include an amount of £27,565 credited to the War Expenses Account. The rate of sales tax was Increased from 5 per cent, to 10 per cent, as from June 28, 1940, the additional amount to be used for war purposes, It should be noted, however, that collections In any one month are mainly In respect of transactions effected In the previous month, and consequently the amount credited to the War Expenses Account in July would be levied on sales which took place during the period between June 28 and 30 only.

SALE LARGE MERIVALE RESIDENCE

Messrs Ford and Hadfleld, Ltd., Auctioneers and Real Estate Agents, 131*133 Worcester street, report that following the auction sale they have sold by private treaty the property.
