NEW ZEALAND WOOL STOCKS

INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR LARGE CONSUMPTION BY LOCAL MILLS New Zealand mills used a record quantity of wool in the year ended on ' June 30, according to figures issued s by the Government Statistician. The total was 10,400,0001b, out of a total production estimated at 310.000,00011?. i The total this year compares with 7.306 0001b last year, 7,200.0001b in the 1938 year, and with 7,800,0001b in the previous best year, 1936. The figures are, as usual, for all wool translated into terms of greasy wool in accordance with the international practice for such computations. Stocks of wool held in New Zealand at June 30. 1940, were 43,300,0001b, against 36,000,0001b at the same date last year. The unfavourable growing season is reflected in the total amount of wool exported for the year, the figure being 292,900,0001b, including that exported on skins, against 327,200,0001b in the previous year. The figures show that the stocks of greasy wool in New Zealand at June 30 were considerably smaller at 14,052,9061b, against 17,098.3871b last year. The increase in the total stocks was due to increases in the scoured and slipe wool held in New Zealand. Stocks of scoured and washed went up from 3,385,8111b to 5,721,4711b, and slipes from 6,310,7801b to 10,184.7211b. Stocks of shoes and scoured wool were higher this June than they have been since the 1932 year, which, every grower will recall, was at the depth of the slump in wool prices.
