RACING AND TROTTING

GERALDIXE CUP NIGHT DRESS WINS HEARTH AND ICELAND SPAR SUCCEED The Geraldine Racing Club’s annual race meeting was opened at Orari yesterday in ideal weather, and the attendance was the largest recorded for a first day for many years, the gate takings alone showing an increase of £3O on last year’s figure. The track was in excellent order and some close racing was witnessed. The sum of £11.847 10s was handled, against £7873

10s on the first day last year, an increase of £3974. The Geraldine Cup was won by Night Dress, owned by Mr W. Parsons, of Rangiora, who had been laid aside with sickness for some weeks, but who was able to attend the meeting. Night Dress was followed home by Petersham and Glenora Boy, and only the last-named is in the New Zealand Cup. Hearth created a big impression by her win in the Squatters’ Handicap. She appears in the nominations for the big November race, but a race like the Stewards’ Handicap would appear to be more in her line. Nightmarch, sire of Night Dress, was represented by another winner in Halt, a long-striding gelding from the Winkie mare Peho. He won the hack sprint

in a convincing manner and returned a substantial dividend. Iceland Spar secured a meritorious victory in the concluding event, getting up from a long way back at one stage to beat Dranoel and Ferriby in the last few strides. Recollection gave a spectacular display of jumping and galloping to win the First Hurdles without much effort. He is also owned by Mr Parsons, and like Night Dress was bred at Stonyhurst. , , Details of the racing are as follows: FIRST HURDLES,

Recollection and Master Dingle disputed favouritism in the First Hurdles, and they finished first and second. Jewish Lad soon took up the role of pacemaker, and with half a mile to go was tour lengths in front of Recollection and Master Dingle, racing abreast, but was joined by this pair rounding the home turn. Recollection was first over the last fence, and went on for an effortless win, pulling up, from Master Dingle, who outstayed Jewish Lad. Arita was six lengths away, just in front of Courtyard. Donadea and Crack o’ Dawn were beaten off. Recollection gave a brilliant display throughout, and Master Dingle showed improvement. The latter lost a little ground at the second fence through colliding in mid-air with Donadea. both narnowly escaping falling on landing. Jewish Lad once again found the journey too far after making a spectacular showing.

None of the remainder impressed. Favourite Prevails All Night justified his favouritism for the Ohapai Hack Handicap by an impressive win. He did not move off well from an outside position, and was well back with half the journey covered. Green Gables was the smartest away, v and turning for home was more than two lengths in front of Camphor, Rose Warden, Wild Coon. Tissie, and All Night. Green Gables was still clear of Camphor, All Night, and Wild Coon entering the straight, but a few chains from the post All Night ran up to her, and after a brief struggle gradually drew away to win by half a length Wild Coon was a moderate third, two lengths in front of Camphor, with Richelieu Pear) and Urge next. The winner was responsible for an attractive effort, and is likely to reach good

class. He is trained by the veteran trainer W. McDonald, and the win was very popular. Green Gables gained a substantial advantage at the start. Wild Coon was somewhat disappointing after his recent good track work. The Cup Combat was responsible for a fast pace over the first half of the journey in the Geraldine Cup by going to the lead from barrier rise and soon opening up a big gap. He entered the back stretch some five lengths in front of Night Dress and Petersham, with another break to Night Hawk, Glenora Boy, and Swordstick. the rear being brought up by Roy Bun and Passaform. The field closed up on Combat rounding the home turn, and when the straight was reached Petersham, Night Dress, and Night Hawk were in clos.; attendance, with Swordstick and Glenora Boy handy. Combat was in trouble a furlong from home, and Petersham showed out from Night Dress and Glenora Boy, with Roy Bun making an appearance from the rear division. Petersham and Night Dress settled, down to a hard tussle, the latter drawing away in the last few strides to w,ln comfortably. Glenora Boy was a fair third, two lengths in front of Roy Bun, with Combat and Night Hawk next, and Dunstan in last place. Night Dress showed his best form, and completed his task in a solid manner. Petersham ran his best race for some time. Glenora Boy was hemmed in on the fence for most of the way, and did not get a favourable run until well into the home turn. Roy Bun was set an almost impossible task in giving the leaders a considerable break over the home stages. Night Hawk was well placed throughout, but was done with a furlong from home

The First Trot Haughty was sent out win favourite for the Geraldine Trot, but was only sixth choice on the place machine. He followed Aurie’s Star, Lady Truman, and Happy Man to the home turn, and was in close attendance on Lady Truman and Happy Man entering the straight, with Passing By showing up from the middle of the field. Haughty gradually drew past the leaders and carried on for an easy win from Passing By. Happy Man staved on for third place from Aurie’s Star, with Clonard and Hamarfast next. A Big Dividend 1 Halt, winner of the Raukapuka Hack Handicap, was in little demand, and returned a win dividend of more than half a century. Raceaway as usual acted as pacemaker from the early stages, and led to the straight entrance from Halt, Airline, Dinah Dhu, and Cymric. Raceaway did not last, long, and Halt shot to the front to win. without any pressure by a wide margin from Airline, who easily accounted for the fast-finishing Taxpayer. Raceaway was two lengths away, in front of Blue Abbey and Cymric. Halt, another of the Nightmarch breed, had often shown promise, but was not expected to be forward enough for this He gave a great display of galloping, and outclassed the opposition over the last two Turlongs. Airline ran another sound race, while Taxpayer did some solid work in the straight after being well back to the home turn, and is a likely improver. The Vulture, Muscatine, and Lady Magellan, who all drew wide out. got away badly and lost their chances. A Smart Performance Hearth was installed a staunch favourite for the Squatters’ Handicap, and scored a convincing win. Gay Parade, Skyrena, and Kilrobe raced in line across the top in front of Hearth and Toro Koura. and Gay Parade had charge entering the straight from Kilrobe, Hearth, and Toro Koura. Gay Parade was still in front ’a furlong from home, but Hearth then drew up to him and had no trouble in beating him home. Toro Koura finished on well into third place, two lengths m front of Rebel Star and Kilrobe. Hearth showed her class, and is one likely to take a prominent part in some of the big spring sprints. Gay Parade showed some of his old form, and will be dangerous from now onwards. Toro Koura' did not begin as well as at Ashburton, but put in encouraging work m the run home. Rebel Star ran a similar race, and for a change was not seen out in front at some stage. Kilrobe was again slow off, but quickly got into her stride, only to stop badly early in the straight. , . ■ A Dual Winner

Haughty, penalised 12 yards, had another easy win in the Orari Trot. She was always well placed after making up her handicap, and, gradually moving up

in the back stretch, was close up enter- ' ing the straight to Irish Dusk, Manawai. < and Great Waitaki. Haughty soon had . the leaders in trouble, and again won without any pressure from Manawai, who narrowly beat Irish Dusk. Lorene Val was six lengths away, in front of Oasis and Great Waitaki. A Creditable Success < Iceland Spar and Dranoel were the two best supported in the Belfield Hack Han- | dicap, and they fought out a close finish. , Whiphand and Ferriby were the early ; leaders, and when the back straight was 1 reached Whiphand had a big lead from Ferriby, Grey Silk, Dranoel, Great Night, I and Iceland Spar. Whiphand showed the way round the home turn and into the straight from Blazealong, Great Night, and Dranoel, with Iceland Spar moving up from the rear position. Whiphand weakened nearing home, and Ferriby, Great Night, and Dranoel in line drew past him. These had just settled down to a hard finish when Iceland Spar put in a claim and. completing a difficult task in a most determined manner, he

got up in the last few strides to win from Dranoel. who beat Ferriby by a head, with another head to Great Night. Whiphand was half a length away. Iceland Spar had a rough passage over the early stages, and with half a mile to go was in last place. It was not till well in the straight that he was able to show up, and his finishing run was a feature of the day's racing. Dranoel ran a solid race, but 'is not a light-weights mount. Ferriby put up another good performance, and finished on better than at Ashburton. Groat Night showed improvement, but Grey Silk stopped badly when looking likely in the straight. Whiphand’s form indicated that he will soon enter the winning list.

Train For Orari For the second day’s racing at Orari to-morrow, a special passenger train will leave Christchurch at 8.55 a.m. Passengers for the races should travel on this train and not on the 8.35 a.m.

express train. The return train will leave Orari at 5.30 p.m., arriving m Christchurch at 8.15 p.m. Watching Form As the weights for the New Zealand Cup are due to appear to-morrow, and in view of the following Dunedin meeting Mr W. P. Russell, handicapper to the' Canterbury and Dunedin Clubs, was present at yesterday s racing at

Orari. Slight Injury Aggravate was not produced at Orari yesterday owing to getting cast in his box on Wednesday. It is intended, however, to race him m tomorrow’s hurdle race. Juveniles in Action Three two-year-olds trained at Orari were given 3 run down the struight

during an interval in yesterday s programme. These were Damascus, by Paper Money from Aspiring, Prince Shad by Paper Money from Wanaka, and Dancette by Speardance from Carette. The two first-named are owned by Mr F. C. Christie and Dancette by Mr J. Mitchell. All shaped well, Damascus and Dancette finishing together in front of Prince Shad, who is likely to develop into one of the biggest of Paper Money’s stock seen out in recent years. By Siegfried Kai Tere, who finished second in the Malaya Gold Cup last Saturday, is by the Southland-owned sire Siegfried, from Vigilance, by Lord Quex from the Signalman mare Watchful, and is a brother to Lady Furst. Kai Tere, who is now six years old, did his early racing in Australia, from where he was sold to go to the East. A New Sire The Australian-bred Redfern —Tulpy colt Redtop. who won a race when

trained at Trentham some years ago, is being used as a sire in Marlborough, and one of his progeny who will be racing shortly is the three-year-old Red Lace, a filly out of the Stonyhurstbred Boundary Hit. Victims of Mishaps Double bettors suffered a check when The Cardinal and Llandaff, _who were among the most fancied division for their respective races, were unable to start at Avondale on the first day. The Cardinal injured a leg in his box on

Saturday morning and. acting on veterinary advice, he was withdrawn, while Llandaff got away from his attendant and galloped down the road, and was unable to be started. Llandaff was produced on Monday and was installed favourite, but he stopped quickly after being one of the leaders to the straight. Geraldine Cup Three records were associated with the Geraldine Cup of 1895. Two starters constituted the smallest field in the history of the race; Chaos carried 9-13 to victory, and his win was

the easiest in the whole series. The only other runner was Invader, a poorclass hurdler handicapped at 6-7, who put up 201b overweight to cover the journey for second money. Chaos went on to finish second in Euroclydon’s New Zealand Cup, but was not nearly such good class as some other Geraldine winners— notably Lady Lillian 9-9, Prime Warden 9-8, and Tasman and Vanguard- 9-2, says the Timaru “Herald.” Tasman and Vanguard both followed up their Geraldine successes by winning the New Zealand Cup with 8-9, and Vanguard achieved further distinction by siring a great horse in Advance. Prime Warden won the Great Autumn, and Lady Lillian the Easter — , Autumn double, Prime .Warden

a fine galloper, but was rather vicious and M. and C. Hobbs eventually returned him to his owner, 'Mr E. Gates. He was leased again and ended his racing career in Southland, where his attendant was H. R. Telford. Prime Warden’s dam was Miss Kate, and it was this that years later inspired Telford to instruct his brother to bid for the Nightraid—Entreaty yearling who was to race as Phar Lap. Maritana, one of the earliest Geraldine winners, won the Timaru and Geraldine Cups, and Ardenvhor captured a New Zealand Cup. Two great horses which won races at Orari, though not the Geraldine Cup, were Lady Zetland and Liberator.
