581 GARMENTS MADE
MEMBERS HELP WITH WAR WORK
Mrs G. Reddell was re-elected president of the Dorcas Society of the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church at the annual meeting held in the church hall yesterday afternoon. "Other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mesdames S. J. Boulton Smith, H. Wi Crowe; secretary. Mrs E. F. Langran: treasurer, Mrs C J. Jones; visitor, Mrs S. Cox; cutters, Mesdames H. H. Holland, .F. Hueston. P, R. Miles, and Miss L. Clark; sub-committee, Miss C. Robinson and Miss M. Shcate; mothers’ meeting, Mrs V. Sim and Mrs A. E. Brown. In her report the secretary stated that during the year 202 garments had been made for the poor of the city, 169 for the Manurewa Children’s Home in Auckland, and 210 for the Lady Galway Guild—a total of 581 garments. In 'addition, 18 yards of material had been given to people who could make garments for themselves, and six knitted garments and 13 patchwork quilts had been distributed. Two quilts will be sent to England for refugees. Mrs Toneycliff (Gisborne) continues to help the society in a practical way. and had sent greetings to the annual meeting. Messrs Drayton Jones had given material from which 27 frocks had been made, and had given also a donation of £lO for the work. Mrs Rouse, of Murchison, had given money for the purchasing of hot water bottles for the sick and aged members of the Dorcas Society, and knitted covers for the bottles. Miss Daisy Ingold’s resignation as treasurer had been received with much regret and a tribute was paid to her yfiars of faithful service. War Work As a result of the war, the society had been called upon to do extra work. In response to an appeal by the National Patriotic Council, members had been knitting for the armed forces, and during the year had made 280 skeins of wool intp balaclavas, scarves and mittens. Another 114 skeins have been distributed to knitters. The secretary had assisted at the City Council Chambers from time to time with the packing of parcels for the troops, and members had assisted with the sorting of clothes at the Lady Galway Guild’s depot. “In these anxious and trying times, it is a cause for thankfulness that we are able to render this helpful service, thus upholding the high standard of the aim of the Dorcas Society at all times to give help, whether local or national.”
Thanks were expressed to the president, Mrs Reddell, for placing her car at the disposal of members for the conveyance of parcels and for the visiting of the sick, and to Mrs S. Cox, who had also made her car available for the visiting of the sick. This was a service that had been greatly appreciated. particularly since the petrol restrictions had been enforced. The treasurer reported a small credit balance.
During the afternoon an address was 'given by Miss M. G. Havelaar. and items were given by Mrs John Owens and Mrs A. Collins.
