“The Light That Failed” For Avon
Walter Huston, Ronald Colman, and Ida Lupino are starred in the Rudyard Kipling film, “The Light That Failed,” the next attraction for the Avon. Ida Lupino, an actress of high drainatic ability, is given a chance that she has deserved for a long 1 time, bhe is Bessie, a ragged street urchin, who becomes a model for the artist hero. The story concerns Dick Heldar, art-ist-adventurer, and Torpenhow, war correspondent. They arc covering the British Sudan campaign against the Fuzzy-Wuzzics when suddenly their vantage point becomes a battle salient, and Heldar suffers a blade wound" over his eye as he saves Torpenhow’s life. The two return to London, where, under the guidance of Torpenhow, Heldar develops into a great artist and wins wide recognition. Good- i natured Torpenhow also takes under his wing a ragged street gamin, Bessie, who proceeds to attempt to en- 1 thral him. Heldar warns her off. Maisie, Heldar’s childhood sweetheart. crosses his path again. Maisie f reveals that she, too, is an artist; but t
Dick has little regard for her talent. His frank criticism earns her displeasure. whereupon he resolves to show her how to. paint. He sets about painting a portrait with the same theme as that Maisie is working on: melancholia. Bessie is enlisted as his model. There is a stirring and surprising climax.
Gary Cooper has been chosen for the starring role in the Jesse L. Lasky production. "The Amazing Story of Sergeant York," in which he will start at Warner’s immediately after the completion of the Frank Capra picture, “Meet John Doe.” Ann Todd, who has a small role in “The Blue Bird,” may be prepared by Darryl Zanuck to take Shirley Temple’s place. Shirley Temple’s film, said to be her last as a regular player, is “Young People.” ★ vjf Miriam Hopkins is to star in the Somerset Maugham story, “The House on the Hill."
