SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

ORGANISATION OF

HOME GUARD

DISTRICT COMMITTEES NECESSARY

Referring to the formation of the Home Guard at the monthly meeting of the Temuka Borough Council on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (.Mr A. W. Buzan) said that the’committee set up in Timaru after the address by the Hon. R. Semple, was found to be unconstitutional. At a subsequent meeting they were informed that each district had to organise its own section. After enrolments had been effected the military authorities would take over. It was not intended to interfere with production in any way and training would have to be done during free time. So far as the Emergency Committee was concerned its work would be co-ordinated with that of the Home Guard. Men in key positions would be kept there and the fire brigade would remain intact. The Temuka district would embrace Milford, Clandeboye. and Waitohi. The Temuka branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in a letter offered its services as the medium for organising the Home Guard. The Mayor said that their services would be gladly accepted, but the council had no power to delegate its authority to any body. It was agreed to send a letter of thanks to the Returned Soldiers’ Association for its offer. The following committee was elected, comprising members of the council (2), Labour Representation Committee, Returned Soldiers’ Association (2), National Party. Farmers’ Union, Progress League, and Geraldine County Council. ~ Reporting for the reserves committee, Cr. J. M. A. Ritchie said that the fences of most reserves were in a bad state and should be repaired immediately. The reserves committee was requested to frame an estimate of the cost. The borough foreman (Mr T. Devine), said that the town had been canvassed for waste material and collections would start to-day. To eliminate sorting it was decided to advise householders of the different types of metal required. To facilitate better traffic control the stop for buses from Timaru will be made at Gabites corner instead of at the post office.

LAWN TENNIS

ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES SHOW SURPLUS

A surplus on the activities of the year was possible because of the outstanding success of the South Island championships, states the annual report of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. In any normal year the levies obtained provided the only certain income for carrying on the association, the report adds. Dealing with membership the report states that this had been maintained at more than 1000 and it was gratifying to record that individual clubs and sub-associations had continued their support of the game in the province. A good run of fine Saturdays enabled all inter-club competitions to be cpmpleted up to schedule. Winners were; A 1 Grade, Aorangi; A2 Grade, Aorangi; B Grade. Wai-iti C; C Grade, Wai-iti.

Although the standard of tennis was on the whole on a par with previous seasons, the three representative fixtures played resulted in wins for Otago, North Otago, and Canterbury, while the match with Mid-Canterbury was abandoned owing to rain. The North Otago team was to be congratulated on its first victory over the local side at Timaru since the grass courts were opened. Otago also gained a similar victory for the first time at Maori Park. At Christchurch a strong representative side gave the South Canterbury players some useful experience of defeat. The men again provided the greater number of challenges and their standard of tennis was correspondingly better than that of the women, especially in representative matches, where in each match the men provided much better opposition. Positions at the end of the season were:— Men—P. Durning, W. E. Renton, F. G. Lewis, Si McWhirter, G. Innes Jones, J. McKay, R. Barclay, J. S. Satterthwaite. W. A. Lewis, J. Rosevear, G. Keen, C. MacKay. . , _ TT Women—Misses D. ShirtclifE, S. Ussher, Mrs W. E. Renton. Misses E. Gawith, B. Sutherland, J. Doyle, P. Morrison, E. Patchett. H. Davey. P. May, D. Raymond, M. Turnbull. Encouraging support by the veterans, among whom were several former representative players, resulted in a very interesting tournament,, and the standard of tennis in each case gave glimpses of the form of these players in their prime. The winners were W. Roberts and G. T. Keen. A team from Waihora Sub-Associa-tion came to Timaru 'and met defeat at the hands of a combined club side. Unfortunately Tengawai was unable to field a team, and the Tenjuka SubAssociation ended a busy season with a successful and well patronised tournament.
