METHVEN HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—ln the interest of common decency and the hockey game, it is to be hoped that the officials in charge of the tournament will, take the necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of the deplorable state of affairs that has existed in the streets of -Methven and at the dance after the tournament every year, when young couples more or less under the influnce of liquor wander about the streets arm in arm. Surely the police and the officials could co-operate to prevent a similar state of affairs this year, and thus be the means of preventing a fine game being brought into disrepute.—Yours, etC " METHVEN RESIDENT. Methven, September 17, 1940.
[Commenting on the above letter, Mrs G. Johns, president - of the Methven Ladies’ Hockey Club, said: “No one could possibly take exception to the conduct at the dance in past years. If it is true that there was misbehaviour outside the dance hall, it was unknown to the "committee and it would be difficult for the committee to control. As the local police are always present, it seems unlikely that anything out of the way occurred. The law relating to liquor at dance halls or in the vicinity thereof is fairly well known and the police in Methven have. strictly • enforced, it. Visitors - to-, the 1
forthcoming dance and residents may rest assured that the entertainment will be conducted with propriety and will be a fitting climax to a good day’s sport.”]
