TROUT FRY FOR LAKES

LIBERATIONS TOTAL 380,000 NEW STOCK FOR CANTERBURY RIVERS Liberations of rainbow trout fry in the. various lakes under the control of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society will total 380,000. A report on the liberations, made to the council of the society last evening, was approved after a short discussion. It was proposed by one member that instead of allocating 100,000 fry to Lake Lyndon, 50,000 of that total should be liberated in Lake Coleridge, but that proposal was not widely supported and the following allocations were agreed on:— Lake Lyndon .. .. 100,000 Lake Georgina .. .. 35,000 Lake Self .. •• 105,000 Lake Grasmere .. .. 70,000 Lake Hawdon .. .. 70,000 The allocation was based on an expected total of fry of 400,000. It was also reported that brown trout fry numbering 500.000 had been liberated in various streams under the society's ' control. The Fish Committee stated the most recent reports from the hatchery indicated that the success which had so far attended the season's efforts had been maintained, although the recent rains caused much discoloration of the water in the hatchery, accompanied by a liberal supply of silt. No harmful results had, as yet been apparent. It was proposed, so far as circumstances permitted, to extend, in accordance with the council's desire, the allocations hitherto accepted as purely tentative. In that regard, the committee reported, it was hoped to include the Rakaia, Waiau, and Conway rivers. Rainbow eyed ova received from the Internal Affairs Department was now being hatched.
