ADDINGTON MARKET

Demand for Store Sheep Maintained FAT CATTLE PRICES FIRM Though the selection was small, and the quality not impressive, store sheep of all sorts met another firm and strong sale at Addington yesterday. Eew good lines were offered, but there was a buyer for everything. Wether hoggets were distinctly dearer, and all other classes held recent rates. The fat sheep entry was bigger than that of last week, but there was an excellent sale for all sorts at prices about 2s a head up on last week. Quality was again patchy, with few good local sheep offered. The cattle entry was more nearly normal than last week's, and the sale was inclined to be erratic. The best beef, however, was fully up to recent' rates and met a sustained inquiry.

STORE SHEEP | The store sheep yarding was about the same size as last week's —2000 head—and there was again a good sale, particularly for hoggets. ' Quality on the whole was good, and prices were a shade better all round. A truck lot of ewe hoggets made 32s 3d, with other good pens at 29s 3d'and 28s 4d, medium lines to 24s 3d, and rather rough crossbred ewe hoggets from the West Coast at 20s. Good wether hoggets made to 18s 9d, with average sorts at 15s Bd. A good sale was made for a truck lot of sound-mouthed halfbred ewes, near to lambing, which went at 275. Older ewes in fair order made 14s 7d. with the best of the small selection of ewes and lambs to 13s 3d, all counted. Some good pens of wethers were forward, the best of these selling at 26s for a nice line of six and elght-tooths, others at 24s 3d, and crossbred six and elght-tooths at 27s 9d. FAT SHEEP A larger yarding- of fat sheep came forward, the total being about 3000, against that of 2250 forward last week. The quality of the offering was patchy, southern entries again making all the difference between a moderately good yarding and an inferior one. Good fat sheep are apparently scarce in the main fattening districts in the province. The demand was keen, and from the outset there was a strong sale at values about 2s a head above those of last week, The sale was inclined to be erratic, and the inferior sheep were not easy to sell, but higher prices were maintained right till the end. Top price for wethers was 53s lOd for the best of an outstandingly good line from A. T. Allen (Scargill). Ewes made to 53s Id, that price being paid for the best of the Southland lines. Values were:— Extra prime heavy wethers, to 53s lOd. Prime heavy wethers, 47s to 51s, Prime medium-weight wethers. 44s to 46s 6d. Ordinary wethers, 39s to 435. Light wethers, to 38s 6d. SPRING LAMBS Fourteen spring lambs were entered and made up a small but choice offering. The best of thg lambs sold at prices equivalent to about 14d per lb. top price being 40s 4d for two sold on account of Stapleton's Estate (Irwell). FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry was much bigger than that forward last week, 388 being entered against 264. Prices were fully up to those of last week, and in the case of some of the better steers and heifers were up to 10s a head better. At the beginning of the sale it appeared as though the yarding would be smaller than it was, and bidding was free and keen at higher prices. More cattle arrived later, and the sale eased back, but it did not fall much below that of last week. The quality of the offering was generally good, and some excellent lines were penned. A fair quantity of beef is being brought down from the North Island at present, and this has to some extent relieved the pressure on Addington. Good beef was worth 52s 6d per 1001b, with the best up to 57s 6d and in cases 60s. Top price for steers was £25 7s 6d for one sold on account of a North Canterbury client. Heifers made to £2l 7s 6d for one sold- on account of a client, and cows made to £l7 12s 6d for one from H. R. Schaffer (Sefton). A line of 10 steers from H. Light-weights showed little change throughout the sale. Choppers were in much heavier supply and the sale eased all round by about 10s a head. Baconers were in fairly heavy supply and though the sale was a good one, it was hardly as keen as that of last week. All round, values were easier by about 2s a head.
