RACING AND TROTTING

CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB ANNUAL STEEPLECHASE MEETING PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW • The three principal events at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s annual steeplechase meeting on Saturday will attract widespread interest. These are the Homeby Steeplechase, Longbeach Hurdles, and Brabazon Handicap, which are yearly looked upon as dress rehearsals for the Grand National Steeplechase, Grand National Hurdles, and Winter Cup , respectively. The fields are very satisfactory, and the majority of the horses engaged in the big events will be seen in action ' The chib is certainly fortunate in assembling in the Homeby Steeplechase such a strong representation ©! the season’s cross-country performers, these including last year s winner, Padishah, as well as Slayer, Ballybrit, Flashlight, Dauber, Nightbound, and Baltruin, all winners in recent months. There is no doubt Padishah has been set a severe task with 12-13, but this is only 71b above his National impost, and he will have a mile less to travel. He has made a good recovery from his Trentham trouble, and even if ne should fail, the race will do him a lot of good in view of his National ordeal. Slayer looked and schooled well on Wednesday, and again yesterday, and appears to have had the right preparation for his coming engagements. Ballybrit is undoubtedly a smart steeplechaser, and should be prominent throughout. Gold Wren and Trisox would both appear not to be up to the present-day standard. Flashlight has improved in every way, and is certain to have-a strong following. Nightbound has had two serious interruptions in his preparation. Dauber can be depended upon to set a fast pace, but there is a doubt about his staying on. Baltruin is useful, but hardly measures up to this comany. The Longbeach Hurdles has . also attracted an excellent field, containing four North Islanders. Kaiwaka, Tidewaiter, Aussie Ra, and Good Sun. The first-named failed at Trentham, but Tidewaiter attracted marked attention by his success on the second day, and although he will meet different company here, he has to be kept in mind. Aussie Ha, last year’s winner, has raced consistently without a success since, and another win for him would be well deserved. Streamline will have a difficult task with 11-6, but with ground likely to suit him, he must be seriously considered. Recollection has come to hand well, and if ridden by A. E. Ellis is sure to attract notice. Should he win he will be a decided National possibility. Of the remainder, Dividend, Colonel French, Turaki. Hunting Chorus, and Aggravate will no doubt show some prominence but none may be up to this class. The field for the Brabazon Handicap presents as intricate a problem as the Winter Cup, and investors will find it difficult to locate a favourite. The form of at least half of the 24 acceptors entitles them to more than passing thought, and with many smart gallopers amongst the remainder, a surprise result may well be in store. While the Christchurch Hunt Cup Steeplechase for qualified hunters has not drawn a big field, the Lawford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase for hack steeplechasers and qualified hunters, will be contested by some good class jumpers, anti an’ excellent race should be staged. The Camla Hack Handicap has also attracted a strong representation of the sprinting grade, and useful mile performers will be well in evidence in the Kennels Hack Handicap; The biggest field of the day will contest ' e Maiden Stakes, and although two divisions will not be necessary, the luck of the draw and early positions will have an Important bearing on the issue. The track promises to be in its best possible order, the light rain yesterday only having a slight effect on the surface, which is covered with' a more solid sole of grass than is usually manifest at this‘time of the year. The win and place system will be in use, and the following horses are entitled to be well supported;— Hunt Cup Steeplechase—El Caballo, Golden Glow. Lawford Steeplechase—Joy Boa, Baltruin, Arctic Star, Maiden Stakes—Pleading-Noko bracket, Don’t Forget-Whiphand bracket, Blue Abbey. Homeby Steeplechase —‘Padishah, Slayer, Ballybrit. Camla Hack Handicap—Synthetic, Ferriby, Gold Don. Longbeach Hurdles Streamline, Tidewaiter, Aussie Ra. Brabazon Handicap—The Raker, Kilrobe, Disdain. TURF GOSSIP Conditional Licences Eight of the leading jockeys of the Dominion have been granted conditional licences for three months by the executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference, according to the list of jockeys licensed for the 19401941 season published in the Official Calendar.” The jockeys are:—Auckland district, H. N,. Wiggins- Dunedin district, A. E. Didham, J. W. N. Dooley, Hawke’s Bay district P. Atkins; Wanganui district, W. J. Broughton W. Jenkins. G. R. Tattersall; Wellington district, P. Burgess. Broughton was leading jockey of the the Dominion for the second time in succession in the season just dosed, riding 59 winners. Wiggins was third with 47 winners, Atkins was fifth with 43 winners. Tattersall seventh with 39 winners, Burgess thirteenth with it winners, and Jenkins seventeenth with 25 winners. , „ . , ... The “Official Calendar” states that conditional licences are granted under such conditions as may from time to time be imposed in each case by 4he executive committee. The conditional licences mentioned are dated to October 31 in each, case. Track Work at Riccarton A light rainfall at ..Riccarton early yesterday morning made the track somewhat sloppy. The No. 1 track, next to the -course proper, was open for fast work. This provided reMonably good going for the early workers* but it was gradually cut up, and times became progressively slower A true comparison of times could not therefore be secured: but there were several impressive gallops, and trackwatchers were again treated to some spectacular jumping. • Winning Rival, picked up by Good Passage at five furlongs, ran seven furlongs in Irnin 33sec # the last four in 53sec. This filly has furnished exceptionally well, and likely to be benefited by her race to-morrow, she will have to be regarded as a Winter Cup prospect.. , , , Pleading again impressed by beating Great Flight over five furlongs in Imin ssec. the last four in 52 3-ssec. The former will be ridden by L. J. Ellis to-morrow, and on track form should race prominently. A Good Six Stylosa finished slightly in front of Muffler at the end of a smart six-fur-long task in Imin, 17 3-ssec, the last four in 51 4-ssec. , , Whiphand ran half a mile comfortably in 54sec, and his stable-mate, Don’t Forget, reeled off five furlongs in Imin ssec, the last four in 52 4-ssec. Other gallops over five furlongs ineluded Disdain Imin 5 l-ssec, Donadea Imin 0 3-ssec, Doria and Alias Imin 7sec, Dinah Dhu beat Chit Chat in Imin 6 3-ssec, Eulogist and Gentility Imin 7 l-ssec, Portadown and Hugme in Imin 7 3-ssec, and Ferriby beat Dictate in Imin 5 l-ssec, ,the last four in 52 3-ssec. A Speedy Pair Kilrobe had a slight advantage from St, Cloud, with. Black Thread fthree lengths away, after covering six furlongs in Imin 18 l-ssec, the last four in 53 4-ssec. Others over this distance included Wagner and Rebel Star Imin 20 l-ssec, Wardress Imin 21sec, Wild Coon beat Noko in Imin 22sec, and Iceland Spar and Sweet Mystery in Imin 22sec. Blue Abbey and Featherboa ran half a mile along the back in 51sec. Ann Mie beat Hurry Girl in 53 2-ssec, and Grey Honour took 54sec and Paper Note 55sec. Prudent Prince and Settlement strode over seven furlongs .in Imin 36sec. and The Vulture followed in Imin 36 3-ssec. A Working Mile Padishah and Aussie Ha. each carrying about 8-7. were companions over a mile, keeping together throughout and recording Imin 5*3 3-ssec, the first half in 55 2-ssec. ■ Shanghai Lily and Greenbank went over the same ground in Imin 56 2-ssec, the first half in 53 l-ssec, and Rebellion was given a similar task. Over Hurdles In the Dark and Spendthrift set off to jump six hurdles, but after hitting the first Spendthrift repeated the mistake at the second and fell on landing. In the Dark, who jumped the two fences well, was then pulled up, and later Spendthrift,.remounted by T. Boyle, joined In the Dark again, and the pair jumped four hurdles. In the Dark carried on his good work, and is undoubtedly a most improved hurdler. Spendthrift gave a further mixed display, due no doubt in most part to his companion’s dashing work. Sir Frederick did well over four hurdles, and Courtyard and Airdrie showed plenty of ability in a similar task. Over Country Trisox and' La Boca were companions in a round of the country, the former showing the way to his hunting companion throughout. Slayer had the hunter Albar as a mate in a bout over 10 fences. Albar kept up well for about siwen fences, but then began to feel the strain, and hitting the first of the stand double, the last obstacle of his task, dislodged his rider. Slayer once again was responsible for a most attractive effort,' and maintaining a strong pace throughout finished as if another circuit would not have found him weakening. Slayer was ridden by T. 3oyle, but will have the services of J. Mcßae to-morrow. Promising Visitor Blue Steel’s forward running at Marton draws pointed attention to his prospects among the hack steeplechasers at Riccarton. He is improving with every race, says the Wellington “Evening Post.” From the North ' Trentham stables will have few representatives at the Grand National meeting. Good Sun, Ruling Star, and Galteemore are in hurdle events, and Kilometre is in hack races. T. R. George, who now lives at Masterton, intends bringing Ruling Star, Galteemore, and Namesake to Riccarton. Encouraging Work The Winter Cup candidate. Lady Montana, performed a satisfactory trial in finishing solidly to secure second place over seven furlongs at Marton, after being three- horses out practically all the way. It will be remembered that she came from a long way back to be third in last year’s Winter Cup. At Rotorua ’ Golden England, who won the steeplechase double at Rotorua, showed a fair amount of promise as a steeplechaser a few seasons back, but is 12 years old and has done very little racing in recent years. An interesting runner at Rotorua was the one-time good handicap performer Baroscope, winner of the Mitchelson Cup in 1933. Baroscope is 12 years old and has been off the scene for several seasons. Hastings Notes A message from Hastings states that Blue Tiger performed well over some brush obstacles on Tuesday. His Riccarton programme has not been definitely arranged, but he is likely to miss the Grand National Hurdles, and’ may not race on the second day. He will probably contest the Jumpers’ Flat on the first day,, and be reserved for the Lincoln Steeplechase on the third day. Sternchase has made a reappearance on the Hastings track, after a lengthy absence following the effects of striking himself- , , , Limbohra is expected to fulfil his engagement in the Grand National Hurdles. It., is stated that he is a much better horse after his recent Trentham racing, A Serious Loss Word has been received that a yearling colt by Mr Standfast from Expense. dam of Defaulter recently died from the effects of striking himself in his box on Mr I. Mcßae’s property at

Beau Vite for Sydney Because of his big team in active training T. R. George is not going to Australia this time with Beau Vite, and the horse will go into the stable of F, McGrath, at Randwick. McGrath is to train him throughout his spring campaign. Beau Vite, however, will be accompanied by his regular attendant, and a considerable amount of fodder will be taken so as to guard against a sudden change in feed affecting him. It is fitting that Beau Vite should enter the stable of McGrath. There is a box there that has sheltered many champions. Amounis was housed in it; when he went Peter Pan entered, an almost untried • colt; and after him it has been used by Ajax when he has gone to Sydney. Ajax is unlikely to visit Sydney this spring, so no doubt Beau Vite will occupy the box. The owner, Mr R. Stewart, will make the trip by flying-boat. All-round Success Pantheon, whose death occurred in New South Wales this week, proved himself one of the best racehorses in Australia, and in his day he won several weight-for-age events, besides acting as runner-up in a Melbourne Cup. At the stud he gained fame through the immediate success of his progeny, among whom were Peter Pan (Melbourne Cup, twice). Avenger (A.J.C. Derby), Feminist (A.J.C. Metropolitan), Maikai, Pantler. Olympian, Panto, and numerous others. He was a brown horse by Tracery from the Your Majesty mare Scotch Rose, a daughter of Rose of Ayrshire, by Ayrshire; the line tracing back to Sterling. Had One Race Duvach. not Durvach. who finished third at Rotorua on Monday, is engaged in the Cashmere Plate and other races at the Grand National meeting. She had never previously raced, and though her name was claimed a month or two ago, there was a hitch m the negotiations and she got it in-time to run at Rotorua. She is a three-year-old black filly by Foxbrldge from Suhny Song, and is. the first foal of her dam, who is by Hunting Song from Sunny Roe by Sunny Lake from the Soull mare, Merry Roe. Duvach thus comes from a very successful hna.

TROTTING NOTES

Speeding Up Nominations for the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on October 5, will close on September 19, handicaps will be declared on September 27, and acceptances will close on September 30, a period of only 11 days between nominations and acceptances. If this work can be accomplished in such a short time by a country club, there seems no reason why it should not be still further reduced by city clubs. A Brood Mare - Light Wings, a mare by Peter Chenault from Lightnin’, is a recent registration with the New Zealand Trotting Association. She is the dam of a good pacer in Lightning Lady, and is owned by Mr A. Hazlett, of Rakaia. Hoppled or Half-Hoppled? The Drayton and Riverbank Handicaps, to be decided at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on October 5, are for half-hoppled or unhoppled trotters. This is the first programme published which includes these conditions. A Big Team The Ashburton trainer, L; A. Maidens, will have a big team engaged at Addington this month, but unfortunately for him be has several horses of the one class and if all arc started there will be several brackets from his stable. In the Advance Handicap, Rollalong and Zincali will, be his bracket, while Peter Smith will race in the Queen Mary Handicap and Blue Mountain will be his sole representative in the August Handicap. In a field of 13 in the Trial Handicap. Maidens has Labourman, Jackaranda, Palomar, and Roan Duke engaged, and in the Selwyn Handicap Labourman, Roan' Duke, Palomar, Peter Smith, and Rey Spec have been entered. Blue Mountain and War Buoy have been nominated for the International Handicap, In the middle part of the season Maidens had a sensational run of successes and his total of 21 wins represented a fine effort. In the latter part of the ye?r he was not so successful, but with a good spell from racing his team may play a big part at Addington this month. - Wellington Trotting Club For the last year, the racegoing public paid £3420 to watch the trotting at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meetings, and members’ subscriptions amounted to £823 19s. In nomination and acceptance fees, owners paid £2261 5s 4d and ■ official programmes sold for £1093. Retired Voloma has been returned to her owner in Southland, and it is unlikely that she will race again. The Adioo Guy mare went sore after one race last season, and as she is still shoeing signs of lameness she will, probably be bred from. In the little racing she did, Voloma proved herself a great race mare, but the best was not seen of her. From Facer to Trotter An entrant for the Introductory Handicap at Addington is the Aucklandowned Kewpie’s King, who has done most of his racing in hopples. He is a well-bred stallion, by Blue Mountain King from Kewpie, the dam of many winners, including Kewpie’s Guy, Kewpie’s Triumph, Kewpie’s Bingen, Kewpie’s Crest, Kewpie’s Jewel, and Kewpie’s Queen, Kewpie’s King is 10 years old.
