Mrs J. Grimmond (Ross) arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning for a short visit. C. Newton, Merivale lane, will leave for the north to-morrow night. At a meeting of the Esther Glen Memorial Committee held yesterday morning, Mrs J. L. Hay (president) referred to the death,of Miss Frances Cooper, who had been an enthusiastic member of the committee. Members stood in silence as a mark, of respect to Miss Cooper’s memory, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to her relatives. News has been received in Christchurch that Mrs W., P. Thompson (formerly Miss Norah Haggitt, of Christchurch), who for the last few years been living in Hong Kong, has been evacuated to Manila, and hppes to come to New Zealand at the earliest opportunity. Mrs Thompson, who is accompanied by her two small children, a girl and a boy, is a daughter of Dean Haggitt, of Nelson, and formerly vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Merivale, Christchurch. MUSICAL RECITAL

WORKS OF SCHUBERT Leading musicians of Christchurch and those interested in music met in the grey room at Beath's yesterday afternoon for the first of a series of four recitals to be given by Mr Haagen Holenbergh, the Danish pianist, and Madame Gower Burns, the well-known soprano. The guests were welcomed by Madame Gower-Burns, who wore a brown, beige, and green speckled suit, fox fur, and brown felt hat, and by Mrs Holenbergh, who wore a black suit with white blouse frilled with narrow lace, and a small black hat. ■ The first part of the programme, which was received with much enthusiasm by the large audience, cornprised works by Schubert.. Mr Holenbergh played “Wanderer Fantasy,” “Soiree de Vienne” (No. s),,and “Ecossaise,” and Madam Gower-Burns, with Mr Holenbergh as accompanist, sang “Love’s Unrest,” “Thou Art Repose.” “Suleika’s Song,” and “Cradle Song.” The second part of the programme was devoted to the works of Finnish composers. Madam Gower-Burhs sang “The Tryst” and “Whisper, Rushes” (Sibelius), “Twilight" (Jainefelt), and “To a Rose” (Stanhammar). and Mr Holenbergh played “Impromptu,” “Romanze,” and “Finlandia” (Sibelius). ' ' After the recital, Madam GowerBurns entertained at tea a number of her friends, including Mr and Mrs Holenbergh.

At a meeting of the executive of the Canterbury (New Zealand) Travel Club held yesterday morning a vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs N. W. Robbins in the death of her mother. Mrs J. Miller. Mrs Robbins is a member of the entertainment committee of the club. 'At a card party held at the Cathedral Grammar School this week, prizes were won by Mesdames Tew. French, Debenham. and consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs Royfee, Mr Dundas, and Mr Graham. At the Church of St. Mary of the Angels, Moorhouse road, London, the wedding was celebrated recently of Dr. T. J. MacCormac. lieutenant, R.A.M.C., son of Mr and Mrs P. J. MacCormac. of Wellington, and Miss Evelyn O’Brien, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas O’Brien, of Newtown, Wellington. The ceremony was performed by Father J. P. Farrell. Mr W. J. At a meeting of he executive of the Canterbury (New Zealand) Travel Club held yesterdav it was reported that two knitting circles of the club, one directed by Miss Meredith-Kaye and the other by Mrs F. H. Hawker, were doing valuable war work, and that a sub-committee of the club, under Mrs Leonard Checkley, was helping in the work of the Lady Galway Guild. It was decided that no morning tea reception be held in race week, but that the next reception be held a week earlier, on August 7. At a meeting of the Esther Glen Memorial Committee held in the office of the Home Service Association yesterday mornlni* it was announced that the fund had reached £l3O 3s 3d, and was now closed. A cheque for £IOO, it was stated, had already been given >to the committee of the Cholmondeley Children’s Home to endow a cot, and it was decided that the remainder of the money, approximately £3O. be given to the matron of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association to be used at the discretion of the matron and nurses, Mrs J, L. Hay, who presided, expressed appreciation of the generosity of all who had contributed to the fund, including many shipmates of “The Press Ship.” It was decided to write to the editor of “The Press,” thanking him for the great help he had given the committee. The V.A.D. department of the Red Cross Society gathered in thqr Red Cross rooms. Cathedral square, yesterday afternoon to honour Miss Edith Somers Cocks, who has held the position of lady superintendent of V.A.D. ! s practically since the formation of the division, and who has now been called up lor military service. DIAMOND WEDDING

MR AND MRS F. J. SMITH To-day, Mr and Mrs F. J. Smith, of 60 Antigua street, will receive the congratulations of their friends on the occasion of their diamond wedding anniversary. Sixty years ago to-day they were married at St. Andrew’s Manse by the late Rev. Charles Fraser. ■ Mr Smith was born at Kelshall, England, and came to New Zealand by the ship Opawa. arriving at Lyttelton in January, 1878. Mrs Smith was born at Stowey, Somerset. England, and came to New Zealand in the Star of India, which arrived in 1873.
