ADDINGTON MARKET

Sound Fat Stock Sale BREEDING EWES CHEAPER

STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was nearly double that of last week, comprising from 1600 to 1700 head. The bulk were good sorts of ewes. The rapidly rising market in the last few weeks was doubtless the cause of the increase. The larger entry, however, put a check to the advance, and there was a general easing of up to 2s a head. Amongst the good lines was a pen of 58 Romney cross t.wo-tooths, Southdown mated, which sold at 35s 6d. Six and eight-tooths made 34s 3d, and tour, six, and eight-tooths 2fls lOd. A truck lot of 70 two-tooth Corriedale ewes <made 33s 3d. and halfbred two-tooths 26s 3d, 25s 7d, and 25s Od, with four-tootha at 25s (>d. Pens of average sound-mouthed fine wools sold at 19s 7d to 18s 2d. More ewe hoggets were penned, the best of them selling at 25s 6d and 25s 7d for two pens, with others in low condition down to 17s. A pen of wether ■ hoggets, in backward condition, made 14s 7d. FAT SHEEP The entry was again on the short side, comprising slightly more than 4000 head, a few more than a week ago. After a sequence of small yardings this left a bare supply, particularly in view of the buying that usually takes place at the preNational market for holiday needs. Another keen sale resulted. Over the earlier stages the improvement was up to Is a head for practically all sorts, and later the best sheep improved by another Is. The sale was very satisfactory in View of the reduction in the price of skins. Quality was of a high standard, good truck lots of both wethers and ewes coming from other provinces. A truck lot of 54 Romney cross wethers from McDonell Bros. (Totara Flat) averaged 54s 2d. and a line from T, D. Jarman (Hororata) averaged 52s 6d (top 55s lOd). The latter vendor also sold a pen of four ewes at 49s lOd. and M. S. Turton (Alford Forest) a pen at 42s lOd. The sale concluded very firmly. FAT CATTLE The entry comprised 500 head, about 30 more than last week. The good quality noted last week was continued yesterday, there being a strong showing of prime cattle—from the West Coast, the Peninsula, and nearby fattening districts. The sale opened somewhat unevenly, and last week's values were no more than mainsii.taAg ne up. mq ‘pasSaJSoad afes aqi BE SUIUUH JO WpßqS 8 SBM 9.13111 P au l B l

There was again a keen market for fat stock at yesterday s weekly market. Fat sheep were about 2s a head dearer, competition doubtless being stimulated by the needs of the National holiday, the “double” market, which will be held next week, not always containing a sufficiency of sheep. Fat cattle wore firm at last week’s rates for good cattle and a shade better for prime heifers. Vealers maintained the good rates of a week ago, and porkers were dearer. Store sections did not sell so keenly. Breeding ewes were down by about 2s a head, and store pigs by from 4s to 6s in some classes.

there was little quotable change in values, although the best rates then ruling were fully maintained. Some excellent pens of heifers were forward, and these sold keenly at from £l4 upwards for the best. The boner class showed a revival in inquiry. Amongst the outstanding lines was a truck lot of seven steers from McDonnell Bros. (Totara, West Coast), which averaged £22 3s 3d, the top price £23 7s 6d, and a heifer £lB. Good beef made from 46s to 48s per 1001b. best to 30s, and medium from 43s upwards. Secondary and inferior ranged from 37s Gd downwards. Values were as under Extra prime heavy steers to £2.i 7s bcl. VEALERS There was a good showing of runners in the vealcr section. One outstanding 13months runner made the exceptional price of £l2 3s Gd. The entry w'as a shade smaller than that of a week ago. small vealcrs and calves being tew, and what there w'as of this class was of indifferent quality. For all good sorts there was an excellent sale, last week's improved 'rates being maintained. Values were:— Extra good runners, to £l2 3s Gd, Good runners, £6 to £7 ss. Medium, to £5 ss. Best vealcrs. to £5 IGs Gd, Medium to good vealcrs. £3 to £4 ss. Ordinary vealers, to £2 10s. Large calves, to £2 ss. Small calves, 13s to 335. STORE CATTLE There was a very small entry in the store section, which included several pens of steers in forward store condition. No pens of yr.ung straight lines' were forward, and cow’s for grazing were few in number. A pen of eight thrce-ycar-old Hereford steers sold at £tl Is. and another at £9 6s. Bulls made to Etl 18s Gd for the best, others from £G 10s to £9. DAIRY COWS The entrv in the dairy section was a' shade smaller, and cows at the drop sold under keen competition at slightly improved values. For backward springers there was little, demand. A well-bred Friesian heifer sold at £l6, and another at £l4, wdiilst there was a limited number of sales at. up to £l3 for good average cows. A big proportion of the penning. however.- in moderate condition and not duo for some time, sold slackly at from £5 to £6 10s. FAT PIGS The porker entry was on the small side for the reauirements of butchers, consequently prices from the outset w'ere very firm, and continued to Increase as the sale progressed. Over the last two races tJiev were the highest so far this season. Choppers were in medium supply and competition w’as again keen at last week’s rates. Baconers were forward in medium numbers and the sale showed very little change from that of last week. Values were:— Choppers. £3 8s 6d to £9 18s 6d. Light porkers. 52s Gd to 55s Bd. Medium porkers. 56s Gd to £3 2s Bd. Heavy porkers, £3 4s 6d to £3 Us Gd. Average price per lb. 81d to 9id. Light baconers. £3 10s Gd to £3 IDs Gd. Medium baconers. £4 3s Gd to £4 15s Gd. Heavy baconers. £4 19s fid to £5 9s fid. Extra heavy baconers. £5 12s Gd to £6 10s. Average price per lb. 7Jd to Bjd STORE PIGS The jump in prices at last week's store pig sale drew a heavy entry to-day, there being an overflow from the store petis. The sale was very erratic, especially for weaners. Good stores were not so heavily represented as other classes, the bulk being rough and , medium sorts. The weaner panning was the largest so far this season, and the demand was much weaker than at last sale, except for odd pens of good quality. On an average the sale slipoed by from 4s to Gs a head for small and medium stores, and weaners by about 4s. except for the best quality. Sows in pig were in very keen demand, making from £9. to £l4, a line of-five Berkshires averaging £l3- There was a

large gathering o{ buyers round the peris. Values were:— ' Small and interior weaners, os to its. medium. 12s to 16s; good, 18s to 225; and best, to 275. | Slips. 21s to 265. , Small stores. 2Gs to 295 ; Medium stores. 32s to 355. ’ Large stores to 445, j BURNSIDE (PRESS 4SSOCIAIIOE rELEOEAM.) DUNEDIN, July 31. There was a short yarding of fat cattle at the Burnside slock sale to-day, only 142 being oenned against 238 for last week, the supply being insufficient tor the derrtand. There was a sharp rise lor all grades of cows and heifers. The sale was a keen one throughout and values for all grades were firmer by £2 10s a head. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £27 2s Gd. prime heavy £l9 7s Gd to £22 7s 6d, prime medium £l6 2s Gd to £ld 12s Gd, light and unfinished down to £l3 2s Gd. Extra prime cows and heifers made to £l7 ,17s Gd. prime £l4 2s Gd to £ls 7s Gd. medium £ll 2s Gd to £l3 12s Gd. and light and unfinished £8 2s Gd to £lO 7s Gd. In the store cattle section there was also a small yarding. A nicely bred pen of two-year Shorthorn bullocks realised 3s and the few others offered met a keen sale. There was a medium entry of dairy cattle, but the demand was not as keen as at recent sales. For best closc-to-profil sorts there was a definite demand at slightly easier values, but for backward and low-conditioned cows and heifers prices were considerably easier. In the fat sheep section 2297 were penned against 1792 last week. The quality was the best for several weeks. The market cncned with heavy ewes selling in buyers' favour. Medium and light-weight ewes were easier by 2s to 3s a head, and over the final races there was an easing in all grades. Extra prime heavy wethers hr ght to 535. prime heavy 41s Gd to 4Gs Gd, prime 35s fid to 38s Bd. medium 30s fid to 33s Gd. and light down.to 275.
