RAIL-CAR FOR WEST COAST

' ♦ WAR WORK CAUSES DELAY IN DELIVERY [From Ctur Own Reporter.] GREYMOUTH, July 30. The president of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce (Mr P. J. McLean) recently communicated with Mr E. Casey, General Manager of Railways, asking when the West Coast was likely to have the rail-car promised for July, 1939, as an improvement to the service to Hokitika, particularly as the road service has been discontinued on week days. In reply, Mr Casey 'has forwarded the following letter: “An order for 10 rail-cars was placed with the Vulcan Foundry Company, Lancashire, in May, 1938, and in ordin-

ary circumstances these cars would I have been placed in traffic in New Zealand about a year from the date of the placing of the order. However, in consequence of the international situation, which resulted in preference being given to the manufacture of war materials, the building of the rail-cars has been delayed, and although fair progress has been made recently, it is impossible to say definitely when the cars will be placed in commission in this country.”
