STEER RUNS WILD AT GREYMOUTH

♦ MAN ATTACKED AND INJURED [From Our Own Reporter.] GREYMOUTH, July 30. A steer which bioke away from a herd of nine cattle shortly before 8 o’clock this morning caused considerable excitement and some damage before it was destroyed. Mr A. G. McNeill, a married man, of Cobden, was attacked by the steer and, injured. The steers, the property of Stewart and Sons, butchers, proved most difficult to handle, when a drover, Mr B. Steele, moved them from the cattle yards near the Greymouth goods sheds. One broke away, and the drover went in pursuit, leaving the other eight herded against a fence. He eventually got the runaway back into the yard, but the, other eight steers had run away and careered up the wharf and through the town as far as Cobden bridge. Mr McNeill was standing at the Greymouth end of the bridge, and attempted to turn the steers into a side road. A steer charged him, caught him on its horns, and threw him some feet into the air. He then managed to crawl under a fence, about 10 feet away, where he was picked up by a motorist, who had seen the incident, and taken to his home. He was attended by Dr. W. A. Bird, and was found to be suffering from, severe bruising and abrasions. He is confined to his bed. The steer which attacked Mr McNeill continued up Omoto road, meeting two youths on bicycles. They scrambled over a fence, and the steer charged the bicycles, doing considerable damage. The steer was by this time -obviously mad. and appeared likely to charge anybody or anything in sight. The police were communicated with, and it was shot by Detective C. Davis. The remainder of the herd was then placed safely in a paddock.
