NEW BRIGHTON SEWERAGE
* HEAVY COST OF NEW PLAN EFFECT ON RATING POSITION The heavy additional burden on ratepayers involved in the latest proposals for the sewerage reticulation of New Brighton was emphasised in a report presented to the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. The report was referred to the finance committee of the board. The estimated cost of the latest plan is £142,254. The report of the secretary (Mr C. F. Champion) stated;— . “The estimate of the cost of laym 0 2d miles 47 chains of sewers, four miles 52 chains of rising mains, and constructing nine pumping stations, is £142,254, and the estimated annual cost of maintenance of the above work is £1640. The following table gives the annual requirements for interest, sinking fund, and maintenance for periods of 30 to 50 years. Although a 50-year table has been included, I am of the opinion that the Local Government Loans Board will limit the period to about 35 years.
v Tt is obvious from these figures that the ratepayers cannot stand the burden of rating in addition to their already very heavy rates, and it would appear that the scheme requires considerable curtailment. Several schemes have been, prepared by the board and submitted to the borough from time to time, but each time it has returned the plans and asked for a bigger area to be reticulated until finally a scheme was requested for the whole of the borough.”
