TECHNICAL COLLEGE BOARD

* NOMINATION FOR VACANCY The Christchurch Drainage Board decided last evening to support the nomination of Mr A. G. Williams to fill a vacancy on Ihe Technical College Board of Governors. A suggestion to support the Christchurch City Council’s nomination of Mr G. Manning was defeated. Mr E. H. S. Hamilton, after the reading of a letter from the Heathcote County Council asking for support for the nomination of Mr Williams, moved that support be given by the board to that nomination. Mr F. M. Robson moved an amendment that the board support the nomination of Mr G. Manning by the Christchurch City Council. He said that the council contributed more to the college than all the other local authorities concerned, and ought to be directly'represented. “I am a member of the board and know that Mr Williams is a very capable member,” said the chairman of the board, Mr W. J. Walter. “Mr Manning is a capable .local body member, too, but Mr Williams has done good work for the Technical College Board.” Mr H. G. Livingstone: Is there any reason why Mr Williams should not be nominated?

The amendment was lost on a show of hands, and the motion carried.

REPLY TO STATEMENTS ON

REPRESENTATION

A reply to comments made at a meeting of the Christchurch City Council and reported in "The Press” yesterday about the representation on the Technical College Board of Governors was made in a statement to “The Press” last evening by Mr A. G. Williams, a retiring local bodies’ representative who is standing for reelection.

"The report states that the council votes with 10 other local bodies for the election of one member of the College Board,” he said. "As a matter of fact, there are 12 local bodies, including the City Council, that have nominating and equal voting power for three members at present holding seats on the board.

“As for the amount donated by the Drainage Board, boroughs and counties, who have voting powers, I can only conclude that Cr. Lyons was incorrectly reported, as the £lO stated bears no resemblance to the actual amount.

“While I am not discussing the justice or otherwise of the City Council’s claim to direct representation on the board, I would point out that two city councillors hold seats (Crs. T. Nuttall and J. Jones). Although not elected directly by the City Council they have a substantial voice in the control of the college.”
