RECORD OF LAMB KILLINGS
TOTAL FOR SOUTHLAND NEARLY 1,600,000 LARGE INCREASE ON LAST YEAR ITHR PRESS Special Service.] INVERCARGILL, June 21. Southland lamb and sheep killings for the season, now ending ate expected to be nearly 1,600,000 'head, representing an increase on last-year’s record of 200,000 head, or 14 per cent. The total killings at the Southland Frozen Meat Company’s . works at Makarewa and Mataura may reach 1,000,000, and the total for the Ocean Beach works will be about 590,000. These figures show ah average of more than 500,000 lambs and sheep for each works. Fifteen years ago the total killings in Southland were steady at about 500,000. The figure has been trebled through farmers taking advantage of new methods of lamb production and grazing, and it is particularly satisfactory that growers have also established an international reputation for quality while rapidly increasing output. It had been araanged to close the works on Thursday, but supplies are still Offering. It was expected that there would be a full day’s killing at Ocean Beach yesterday, and partly because of the delay caused by a stopwork meeting at Makarewa on Wednesday there was half a day’s killing there yesterday. In Eastern Southland lambs are still being fattened and all stock offering will be killed on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Cattle will be slaughtered at Makarewa as long as they continue to com© forward, taut supplies may dwindle next week. \
