Evacuation of Alexandria
The safe arrival in Great Britain of the 2nd Echelon of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force was announced in a broadcast by the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) on Thursday night. “After so many .anxious weeks of waiting we learn with relief and glad hearts that the 2nd Echelon has arrived safe in port,” said Mr Fraser. “It is with pride and thanksgiving in these tragic days that the people will learn that it is at a port in the Homeland,. Great Britain, that the contingent of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, which left in May, and the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, have disembarked. “The troops are reported to be all well and in high spirits. “During the voyage the convoy called at Cape Town, Freetown, and Sierra Leone.” Princess Juliana Princess Juliana of the Netherlartds is in Canada, in flight, it is reported, from the Nazi secret police.
Fifty trains have evacuated 50,000 people from Alexandria during the last six days. . ,In addition large numbers left by steamer and by road. The public have been warned not to use tombs for air-raid shelters. Japan and America . Informal discussions between Japan and America are under way, says a message from Tokyo. Preparations are being made for a new commercial treaty. Australia to Grow More Flax The Australian Government will assist the Commonwealth in the cultivation of 20,000 acres of flax, of which stocks are very urgently needed by the United Kingdom.
