' GREY MAIN SCHOOL / BUILDING ' * ' ■ __ USE ‘GRANTED FOR CHURCH CONFERENCE After having previously declined to permit the building to be used the Grey Main School Committee at its monthly meeting’ decided to accede to the; request of the Church, of Christ committee to make use of the building for the Church of Christ conference, for the girls’ camp only, at which approximately 150 girls will be accommodated. Members of a deputation from the Church of Christ, Pastor R. A. Blampied and Mr W. James, told the committee that the church people were concerned because, there was no accommodation available for 300 or 400 who would come in addition to about young people for the annual camp. There was no suitable hall in Greymouth and in the last 10 or 11 years schools had been used in other centres. The committee was assured that every care would be taken with the building. The Canterbury Education Board advised that ground improvements would be considered after other urgent matters had been dealt with. Robertson) for patriotic purposes are regular contributions from the 31 pupils of the small school at Sergeants Hill, through their teacher. Miss J. Woodward. The produce stall at the school recently produced £l4 7s. . PLACEMENTS MADE AT GREYMOUTH Seventeen private placements, 12 permanent and five temporary, were made at the. Greymouth office of the State Placement Service this week, comprising three bushmen, one butcher’s shop band, one seaman stoker, one trucker, one yardman (all permanent), one lorry driver (temporary), six labourers (four permanent and two temporary), 48. contract (two temporary); females: one domestic .in permanent employment. The Poolta is expected about June 25 from Westport, to complete loading for Gisborne and Napier. The Karepo is due about June 29 to load for Wellington; The Gael is due at the week-end with cargo from Wellington, and after diswill proceed to Hokitika. PORT OF WESTPORT WESTPORT, June 21. WESTPORT SCHOOL OF MINES DECREASE IN REVENUE REPORTED A decrease in revenue was reported at the annual meeting of the Westport School of Mines on Thursday. Mr J. C. Brown presided. The revenue for the assaying showed a definite decline. The report showed that classes were well maintained during the year. Mr E. Cordon won the Ppwick trophy for outstanding work for the third sue-' cessive year. Mr T. Dellaway passed his underviewer’s examination , and mine deputies’ certificates were secured by J. Boyd, W. Fleming, and H. McLeod. As a means of increasing the revenue, the president suggested _ that more assays and enlistment of mining students would be a help. Officers were elected as follows; President, Mr Brown; vice-president, Mr H. Lovell: auditor. Mr P. Struthers; trustee of the Granity School, Mr J. H. Enright. PERSONAL NOTES GREYMOUTH The Hons. T. F. Doyle (Bluff), M. Connelly (Dunedin), G. R. Hunter (Christchurch), Vincent Ward (Wellington), and T. F. O’Byrne (Invercargill), members of the Legislative Council, are visiting Greymouth. Mrs J. Morton has arrived from Dunedin. Mr J. Ryan (Rotomanu) has returned from Christchurch. Mr W. T. Ogilvie has left on a visit to Christchurch. Mr James O’Brien, M.P., is expseted to arrive to-morrow, coming by aeroplane from Wellington via Westport, to discuss with the State Miners’ Union certain matters affecting the working of the State mines. Mr M. Moen, national secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, will arrive at Greymouth on Monday from Westport," and will meet members of the Greymouth branch on Monday night. WESTPORT Mr J. C. Mulvihill left on Friday for Christchurch to attend a conference of herd recording officers. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE KUMARA Mesdames Pierson and Chant were welcomed back at the monthly meeting of the Kumara Women’s Institute and a motion of sympathy with the Steel family in its recent, bereavement was recorded. The invitation of the Runanga branch to its birthday on July 11 was accepted. Members expressed pleasure at the capable way the dressmaking classes had been conducted by Miss Dewe, and it was decided to send a letter of appreciation to headquarters. Mesdames Birss and Reedy were accorded. a vote of thanks for making available their sewing machines. Competition winners were:—Shortbread, Mrs Comport 1, Mrs Lakin 2, Miss Hamer 3; best bloom, Mrs Reedy 1, Mrs Fensom 2, Miss Hamer 3. At the social half-hour Miss McLaughlin was the winner of the game “musical backs.” Afternoon tea was served, by the hostesses, Mesdames Hunter and Fensom.
