OVERLAPPING OF DELIVERIES

BREAD, MEAT, MILK AND COAL REORGANISATION SOUGHT BY MINISTER (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, June 21. “Petrol wastage must stop. Overlapping deliveries of basic commodities, such as bread, meat, milk, and coal, must be reorganised by the industries concerned to provide war-time economy and efficiency,” said the Minister for Supply (the Hon.. D. G. Sullivan) to-day. The Government was doing everything possible to eliminate waste, and it expected the distributive side of industry to co-operate. Two or three deliveries in one street were not only wasteful in fuel and vehicles, said Mr Sullivan, they uselessly occupied manpower that was urgently required to fulfil the demands of the war. The excessive overhead caused by the duplication of deliveries had to be cut out, and he desired the industries involved to take the initiative. Persons operating deliveries in basic commodities in district were asked to get together immediately and evolve a scheme for the elimination of overlapping. They were to appoint a representative who would act in conjunction with the local petrol advisory committee when petrol supplies for their industry were under consideration. Local petrol advisory committees had instructions to review petrol licences for the various industries, and, with the assistance of a representative from each section, it was anticipated that a considerable reduction would be possible. Mr Sullivan hoped that every industry would have its representatives appointed immediately in each district, and its plans prepared for prompt action.
