COWSHEDS OF LONDON
(spEcrAttr -written for the press,)
[By D. H. Kic: IN the heart of London hundreds of cattle are kept. Off a busy e street, with its constant traffic- £ roar, small cowsheds thrive. e The proprietors are mostly Welsh- j men, and the number of cattle kept s varies from 12 to 100. , i’ew , Lon- x doners are aware that any of the c milk delivered at their door has I been produced Within the city. s In north and east London are the r homes of these herds of cows', and in the past they have brought pros- 1 perity to their owners. Cattle-food i contractors deliver hay, beet, and i mangolds. Breweries deliver grains i —this foodstuff is likely to become 1 scarce, as breweries' find it more £ profitable-to dry the grains for esc- £ port. Manure is removed twice a I week, and demands a good price. £
:KAKDS.] The borough councils of London exercise a strict control over these cowsheds. A licence is issued; at accost of ss, and must be renewed every year. Once a quarter the London County Council; veterinary surgeon examines all the cattle. Att' unfavourable report- from this official shells trouble for any cowshed proprietor. NO new licences are issued and a licence once lost- is-never renewed. Soon a cowshed in London will be a thing of. the past. Officialdom in recent years has begun to frown more and more upon these small farmhouses, and the coming of war has added to their troubles. The ever-expanding" combines, the, largest' of them founded by a Welshman, have also played their part in condemning them to extinction.
