RANGIORA NOTES, GRASSLANDS COMPETITION ARRANGED 1 A grasslands competition for farmers in the Woodend-Waikuku district will j be held next season, according to a decision of the Woodend-Waikuku branch of the New Zealand Farmers Union on Wednesday evening. A cup : for the winner of the competition has : ■been given by Mr J. R. Keeper. The value of good grasslands in increasing production was emphasised in an address by Mr A. S. Nash, instructor in agriculture at Rangiora. Mr Nash outlined the best methods of mam- . tabling the pastures. Fifteenth Anniversary The fifteenth birthday of the Rangiora Auxiliary of the Methodist ; Women’s Missionary Union was celebrated on Wednesday afternoon, the president (Mrs W. T. Dennis) presiding over a large attendance. An anniversary cake was given by Mesdames Dennis and C. L. Dodge. A satisfactory sum for the funds of the auxiliary was raised from a sale of goods. The stallholders were Mrs J. N. Lewis and Miss U. Inch. Items were given by Mesdames J. C. Chambers and R. H. Ellis. Addition to Hospital Good progress has been made with the additions to the Rangiora Hospital,, according to a report by the contractors, Keir® and Thompson, Ltd, yesterday. Finishing work is now being done and -the extensions will soon be ready for painting. The whole jobis likely to be finished within two months unless the work is affected by unfavourable weather. Activities to be Modified Because of the war, the Rangiora High School Ex-Pupils* Association has decided to curtail its ac^ l * ies year. No further effort will be made in the meantime to collect funds for the establishment of a .memorial hall, for which about £BOO has been raised to date. KIMBERLEY RED CROSS SUB-CENTRE A meeting of those interested in forming a sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held at Kimberley recently. There was a good attendance, and it was unanimously decided to form a sub-centre. Officers elected were:— Patrons, Mrs W. Syme and Mrs W. Manson; president, Mrs A. A. fatott, vice-presidents, Mrs W. H. Ede, Mrs J. Steele; secretary and treasurer. Miss M. Donald; assistant-secretary, Miss M. Steele; general committee, president. vice-presidents, Miss M. Donald, Miss M. Steele, Mrs G. Jowers, and Mrs C. B Badminton Club held a successful dance in the Kimberley, Hall, and as a result the sum of £lO was raised for the sub-centre. The dance music was played by Mr A. Hart (piano) and Mr S. Syme (violin) Mrs G. Jowers and Miss B. Jenkins played extras. Messrs S. Hart and A. Macaulay were masters of ceremonies. Novelty dances were won by Miss R. Eaves and partner and Mr A. Macaulay and Mrs J. R. Manson. A competition was won by Mr C. Chappell.

KOWAI COUNTY COUNCIL Cr H. May was re-elected chairman and Cr. J. Ashworth deputy-chairman at the annual meeting of the Kowai County Council. There were present: Crs. May, Ashworth, J. B. Bowker, J. Wyllie, S. D. T. Boyce, and T. Chamberlain, Cr. M. I. Malthus was granted leave of absence for the remainder of the council term, having enlisted for active service, the chairman and members expressing appreciation of Cr. Malthus’s services, and his action in volunteering. . . _ n The council decided to oppose an new conditions and increases of wages as set out in the demands covering local body drivers. Members expressed the opinion that unions were making unjustifiable demands considering the present war crisis, and support was given to the following resolution: “That because of the present world conditions the 48-hour week be reinstated without any increase in the existing wages, and that all awards be immediately suspended for the duration of the war.’’ . , . The clerk was instructed to issue final notices to all persons whose rates , remain outstanding as at March 31. The financial statement showed: Receipts since last meeting, £145 13s Id; accounts for payment, £558 5s 5d (including £4OO hospital lavy); debit balance in bank, £370 9s 4d. - GLENTUNNEL COMBINED CHURCH GUILD The annual meeting of the Glentunnel Combined Church Guild was held recently in the Public Library. Mrs John Deans, who has resigned from the position of president after many years, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs W. J. Harrison was appointed president for the ensuing Year and Mrs L. A. Marshall was re-elected secretary. Stalls were allotted to the various districts. FARMERS* UNION BRANCHES’ ANNUAL DEBATE About 50 farmers met in the Tai Tapu Hall for the annual debate between the Tai Tapu and districts and Motukarara branches of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Mr W. G. Macartney presided. The subject of the debate was “Large versus small-scale farming.” „ ' . . Messrs Miller and Coop, of Motukarara spoke in favour of small holdings and Messrs Macartney and Fleming supported the advantages of larger farms. At the close of the debate Professor McMeekan (Lincoln College) screened a film showing farming in the Argentine, on a large scale. ASHLEY BANK EFFORT FOR RED CROSS A successful effort for Red Cross funds was made by the Ashley Women’s Institute on Tuesday evening, when a progressive euchre tournament combined with a bring and buy was held in the school. Cards prizes were won by Mrs H. Lock and Mr R. Stewart. A bring-and-buy table in charge of Mrs W. Drake did good business. The funds will benefit by about £3. GLENTUNNEL PARISHIONERS’ 1 MEETING The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Luke’s Church, Glentunnel, was held recently. The Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty occupied the chair.
