Warner Baxter at Crystal Palace
Warner Baxter and Alice Faye a're the stars of “Barricade” at the Crystal Palace. He is seen as an ultra-sophisticated foreign correspondent stationed in Northern China who scents the biggest scoop of his career when he learns that an American entertainer witnessed the murder of a government official and has fled the city. Off he goes on her trail, finally to encounter her aboard a west-bound express just as the train is stopped by a band of marauding guerrillas. With Alice Faye (for she is the entertainer) Baxter manages to escape the vicious bandits and wins refuge m the compound of a remote American consulate. But this safety is only
temporary, as the raiders soon attack and besiege the building. Thrilling episodes ensue, as Baxter and the girl find love amidst peril and attempt to escape. Gregory Ratoff directed “Barricade,” which features in the cast Charles Winninger, as the heroic American consul, Arthur Treacher, Keye Luke, and Willie Fung. Baxter, a screen veteran, says that in all his career he has never appeared as a newshawk in spite of his wanting quite earnestly to have such a role; it seems the proper story has never turned up until now. The screen play by Granville Walker at last gives him his opportunity. The supporting feature is “Around the Town.”
