TURF GOSSIP A Quiet Morning Although there was a hard frost at Riccarton yesterday conditions were favourable for track work, and the No. 7 grass track provided excellent going after the recent welcome rain. The Wrecker opened proceedings by running a mile in Imin 47 l-ssec, the last three in 40 l-ssec. A Likely Maiden Great Heart beat Haughty Lad over half a mile in 50 4-ssec. The former, by Magnus from Stout Heart, by Winning Hit from Equipment, will have his first race at Washdyke on Saturday, and should make a good: showing. Capricious finished better than Settlement at the end of a mile in Imin 48 3-ssec. the last six furlongs in Imin 20sec. Grey Silk easily accounted for Stabilise over six furlongs in Imin 19sec. The latter is being trained hy J. Tomkinson for A. McAulay, who is still an inmate of the Greymouth Hospital. Blue Coat and Pink Lad ran five furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec. and Raceaway, assisted by Shangri La. covered the same ground in Imin 4 2-ssec. Smart Effort The best over this distance was credited to Kilrobe. who recorded Imin 2 4-ssec. She is to make her reappearance at the Amberley meeting. Ageratum. Blue Abbey, and Sweet Memory finished in a bunch after taking Imin 4sec for the same distance. Disdain, joined by Iceland Spar near the five furlong post, covered seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec, the first four in 53 3-ssec. A Useful Mile Wild Talk, with Great Swoop joining her at seven furlongs, galloped a mile pleasingly in Imin 43 3-ssec, the last half in 52 4-ssec. She will be an interesting contestant in the Timaru Cud oh Saturday. Donadea ran six furlongs in Imin 16 4-ssec, arid Chanteur and Dispense were well clear of Eulogist after running five furlongs in Imin ssec. Guilder took Imin 5 4-ssec' for the same journey. Tracks Closed To-morrow Other horses engaged at Washdyke on Saturday were restricted to easy work, and as the tracks will be closed to-morrow, some of them will be galloped to-day. These include Density, who is to be given a gallop on the course proper. In Partnership Mr H. A. Rhind has acquired a halfinterest in Aggravate from his new owner-trainer, H. Nurse, and the Sharnbles gelding will in future race in the name of the partnership. Entered for Egmont Nominations as follows have been received for the two jumping events on the first day of the Egmont Racing Club’s Winter meeting:— TANGAHOK HURDLES HANDICAP, of £175; one mile and a half—War Lap. Another Sire for Australia Golden Sovereign, a five year-old son of Monarch from Fleche d’Or and a first-class galloper on the English turf, has been purchased by Mr H. S. Thompson for his Tarwyn Park Stud, at Bylpng, New South Wales. A fast passage has been arranged for him, and he is due in Sydney this month. His landed price in Australia will be ; £3BOO. Raced by Sir Abe Bailey, i Golden Sovereign won £4257 in stakes, ' and for a time ruled as second favourite for the English Derby of 1938, in ' which race he ran sixth to Bois Roussel. Golden Sovereign is a grandson ; of Tracery, and his dam is by Teddy, one of the greatest sires of modern ' times. His stock have won £40,866 in England and more than 15,000,000 ; francs in France. His sire. Monarch, ] is also one of the most successful 3 French sires. His stock have won over j 11,000,000 francs, and his son Quatre ; Maitre won the Lincolnshire Handicap ] early this month. ]

TROTTING NOTES t ; Reminder [ Nominations for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will close on - Friday at 5 p.m. ! A Correction In the Gladstone Trot Handicap on the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s programme for Saturday next. Lord Worthy should be on 12 yards behind, not the limit. Coming to Hand The two-year-old gelding by Key de Oro from Belinda is not being hurried in his work, and he is coming to hand nicely under J. Fraser’s care. A solid type of gelding, he promises to develop into a good pacer, but it is unlikely that he will be asked to do any early racing. Ukes Winter Conditions Guy Hugo has been back among the regular workers at. Addington for several weeks now, and he is bearing a bright appearance. Inclined to be unsound, this trotter has given some erratic displays when the tracks have been hard, but with the going at all soft he has proved reasonably reliable and capable of holding his own in useful company. A good stayer, he should be a profitable proposition for winter racing. Enforced Holiday One of the most promising pacers produced last season, Poker Face, has not been seen in action this term, and it appears that there is little likelihood of him putting in a reappearance until well into the coming season. His absence is the result of an accident while running in the paddock, and it was considered wise to give him a long spell. Now a five-year-old, Poker Face is by Jack Potts from Colene Pointer, the dam of a number of good performers, including Kingcraft and Village Guy, and he appeared likely to reach a high standard this season. Back with Former Trainer Until recently trained by R. J. Humphreys, Treasure Bond is now back in his old quarters in C. K. Yeatman’s stable. Yeatman had the handling of this gelding when he first started racing, and he showed good form for him to win a number of races. Treasure Bond has since been in several trainers’ hands without racing with much consistency, and his more recent form has not been greatly attractive. However, he is a good stayer when at his best, and it is possible that Yeatman will find classes to suit him. Speedy Pacer Adversity is being kept in steady work by S. A. Edwards, and this gelding is looking in great order for immediate engagements. Adversity showed brilliant form to be returned a winner during the Easter meeting at Addington. and although he failed to come up to expectations at the recent combined trotting clubs’ patriotic meeting, he is a speedy pacer who should have little difficulty in winning his way to better company, especially over distances up to a mile and a half. Spelling E. A. Berry has placed Lady Slipper on the easy list, and it is not expected « that she will be asked to race again this season. This mare has been rather disappointing in recent months and she has not been returned a winner for some time, but she enjoyed little luck in her racing. When last paraded she appeared to be greatly improved, but in spite of encouraging track work she failed to show the dash expected. 1 She should derive considerable benefit from a spell away from the tracks, and the fact that most of her sire’s stock have taken age to reach their best would suggest that she may be seen in a better light next season. Canterbury Park Programme The programme for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on May 25, is one which should meet with solid support from owners, although it has maintained the policy adopted by the New Zealand, Metropolitan Trotting Club in getting away from the tightest classes for two-mile performers, there being no race of this distance on the card. The principal event, the Winter Handicap, is a 3min 24sec class, of a mile and a half, and carries a stake of £4OO, while the tightest sprint class is provided by the Stewards’ Handicap, a 2min 48sec class, over a mile and a quarter. Two-year-olds will have the Juvenile Stakes, of a mile and a quarter, and this will give them an opportunity to gain further exercise before the New Zealand Sap-

ling Stakes comes up for decision. Improving trotters and pacers are well caterel for in the other events on the programme, and the club is not likely to be lacking in support when nominations close on May 16. [ Oamaru Train Arrangements For the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on May 4, the Railway Department is running a fast pasesnger 1 train, leaving Christchurch at 7.7 a.m. | and arriving at Oamaru in time for the ■ races, while the return passenger train will leave Oamaru at 6 p.m. Cheap excursion fares, particulars of which are advertised in this issue, will be available. MEETING OF BOARD NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION A meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association was held' last evening; Present: Messrs H. W. Kitohingham (president), J. Ms Samson, S. W. Kelly, 'B. McCarthy, ■ T. J. : Buxton, H. C. Harley, R. T. Reid, and,, the Hon. W. Hayward. Apologies for' absence were received from Messrs J. R. McKenzie and J. B, Thomson. : A report was received from the Licensing Committee that the owner of Paddy’s Harvest had been called before the committee to show cause why that horse should not be placed on the schooling list; but as the evidence tendered showed that Paddy’s Harvest did not bore, and as the committee had seen the horse in his next six races, to endorse that evidence, no action was taken. Members of the board were of; the opinion that the evidence tendered ■ by the Licensing Committee conflicted with,:that given at an inquiry held by t! j Wellington Trotting Club and Mr McCarthy moved: “In view of the evidence given -6r\ the inquiry in a the crossing, and inters ference of Paddy’s Harvest with Premier at the Wellington trotting meeting held on January 31,: 1940, conflicting with that given at the inquiry of th association (resulting from the Wellington inquiry) into the general behaviour of the horse, Paddy’s Harvest and the -running of the horse Paddy ? s Harvest in subsequent events, I move that the four drivers, namely, L. O. Thomas, R. B. Berry, P. Holmes and D. C. Watts, be summoned to attend the next meeting of the board

T. Reid seconded this motion , and it was carried. _ ; An inquiry into a complaint against ■ J. Bryce, jun., driver of Renown’s Best in the President’s Handicap at recent Easter meeting held at Addington, was received from the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club, and after discussion it was decided that thei action of the judicial committee be confirmed. A further report from the same club concerning an objection against Franz Derby being awarded the first prize in the High Class Handicap on the second day of the Easter meeting was received. The club’s action in placing < Franz Derby second for galloping past ( the post was endorsed. Also from the New Zealand Metro- ] politan Trotting Club a report was read dealing with a charge of interference, ] lodged by the stipendiary steward, j against- L. Frost, driver of Gay Avon, in the Durham Handicap. The" judicial committee’s decision to take no ac- ; tion ;;-as endorsed. The Ashburton Trotting Club re- , ported that Premier had been dis- ■, qualified from' third position in the . Stewards’ Handicap for galloping past j the post, and the club’s action was j endorsed. . The Thames Trotting Club’s decision to accept the explanation tendered by Toceetie’s driver in accounting for that mare’s form at the recent Thames meeting was also endorsed. The Timaru Trotting Club forwarded > a copy of a claim lodged by Mr R. D. Revell. part-owner of Earl’s Pride, concerning allocation of the prize money in the Timaru Nursery Stakes, run bn March 9. Mr Revell contended that in running third in the first division Earl’s Pride gained minor money, but the) club' had divided the stakes amongst the first and second horses in each division. The board decided that Mr Revell had no claim, as the programme clearly set out the conditions in the two divisions of the Timaru Nursery Stakes. The divisions were plainly governed by rule 233, and the club had acted correctly in its division of the stake money. The deaths of the following horses were reported:—Combine. Little Queen, Zanzibar, and Fairy Brooks. The next meeting of the board will be held bn May 24, at 10 a.m.
