ANZAC DAY
SERVICES IN CITY TOMORROW IMPRESSIVE PARADE ARRANGED-To-morrow, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, the people of Canterbury, with the rest of New Zealand and Australia, will pay tribute to the memory of the men who died during the Great War. Because New Zealand is again at war, and thousands of men, many of them the sons of soldiers of the last war, are on active service, the many services in churches and schools, and beside memorials. will this year have a special significance. The. city’s observance will include one of the longest and most impressive Anzac Day parades ever held in Christchurch. Territorial units, a large contingent of returned soldiers, and officers and men of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve will march along the usual route between Cranmer square and King Edward Barracks. As well as the annual citizens’ service in the King Edward Barracks in the afternoon, a dawn service will be held in the city. Organised by the Christchurch branch of the Australian Returned Soldiers’ Association, the service will be held at 6.30 a.m.. in Cathedral square, where a parade, headed by nurses, will assemble, and march to the War Memorial. The Rev. A. McNeur, C.F., Mr L. E. Vernazo.ni, president of the branch, and Captain E. E. Lloyd will officiate. Mr A. E. Haynes, president of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, will be the speaker at the service in the barracks, from where the procession will march to the War Memorial in Cathedral square. Special services will be held at the Anglican and Catholic Cathedrals in the morning. Again this year the Toe H Service of Light will be held in the evening at the Cathedral, the speaker being the Rev. Gordon Taylor. Many of the schools and colleges in the city will hold their usual morning services. An address by Major E. W. Cuddon will be given at the Christchurch Boys’ High School service organised by the Old Boys’ Association. The pupils of Christ’s College will attend a service at which Mr G. S. Strack will be the speaker! Mr J. K. Moloney will speak at the Christchurch West High School service! Short services will be held this afternoon at St. Andrew’s College and the Christchurch Technical College. St. Bede’s College pupils will attend the service at the Catholic Cathedral to-morrow morning.
