CLEAN-UP ON PUBLIC WORKS
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir, —In all my years of trade unionism, I have never seen such a state of affairs as that which exists to-day. I refer to the proven dictatorship of the present Minister for Public Works, who was allowed to dismiss a member, not because he was a loafer, etc., but because he held views contrary to those held by the Hon, R. Semple. Workers, after being forced into unions, which apparently cannot safeguard them from such attacks are also being deprived from holding political beliefs, other than those laid down by the present Labour Party. These attacks are going to be more far-reach-ing than public works if the rank and file of productive trade unions do not oppose the Gestapo methods imposed on public works employees.— Yours, etc., DEMOCRAT LABOUR. Westport, April 22, 1940. (Subject to the rights of reply of “Decorum” and. “Free Thinker,” this correspondence is now'closed. —Ed., “The Press.”]
