TURF GOSSIP > Reminder Acceptances for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting next Saturday will close at 9 p.m. today. Novice Hurdler Aggravate, ridden by H. Hibberd, gave a creditable display in some schooling at Riccarton yesterday. He is a very promising novice and should be an interesting candidate over the battens later in the year. A Close Similarity Among the starters in the Novice Stakes at Blenheim, both on Saturday and again yesterday, were Batsham and Batsman, whose names are always likely to be confused. Batsham is a four-year-old gelding by Tidal from Hunting Bells, and is trained by T. R. George for Messrs A. F. Loe and F. V. Lyson, while Batsman is a three-year-old by Cricket Bat from Conviction, dam of Mishpa, and is owned and trained by W. A. Watson, of Blenheim. Death of Valuable Yearling Mr E. Hay sustained a serious loss over the week-end. His yearling colt by Solicitor-General from Princess Doreen, dam of Doria, was being exercised on one of the side roads near the Riccarton racecourse on Sunday when he evidently knuckled over, and one of his front legs snapped off just above the fetlock. Veterinary assistance was soon obtained, but there was no chance of saving the youngster and he was destroyed. A high opinion was formed of the yearling, and as Doria had done well for Mr Hay. who bred both of them at the Elderslie Stud, his future prospects looked very bright. The loss was also a severe one to Mr Hay’s trainer, T. H. Gillett, who has not had the best of luck with his team in recent months. A short while ago he lost the services of Dividend, who appeared likely to develop into a big hurdle winner during the winter. Dividend sustained a neck injury in a fall whilst schooling, and his condition shortly after the mishap suggested that his racing days may have been numbered, but fortunately he has made a good recovery. and Gillett intends to put him into light work for a month, in the hope that he will be able to race later in the year. Success Recalled In his reply after receiving the trophy attached to the Waimate Cup on Saturday, Mr A. S. Elworthy, partowner of the winner. Night Dress, said that this was not his first experience of winning the Waimate Cup, as he owned Reval. who was successful many years ago. Stopped Badly King Gustavo gave promise of winning the Waitangi Hack Handicap at Waimate when he entered the straight, but as in his previous races, since he won at Wingatui in February, he failed to see the ordeal through. Unless he shows improvement in later efforts he will probably be gelded and put aside until the spring. A Hardy Veteran Rebel Chief indicated by his two races at Waimate that he has not lost any of his well-known speed, but finds it difficult to master much ground. Although approaching his tenth year. Rebel Chief bears his age well, and his fresh condition was generally commented upon on Saturday. On more than one occasion Rebel Chief has shown signs of being unlikely to carry on owing to leg troubles, but his ownertrainer, F. Hall, has displayed much patience with him, and credit is due to him in still being able to win races on small tracks with the Robespierre gelding. Encouraging Form Streamline ran a very creditable race in the high-weight event at Waimate, and showed a turn of speed during the middle stages. He paraded big in condition, and the race would do him a lot of good in view of his trip to the North Island this week. He and Flashlight will probably be given some schooling this morning. Expensive Behaviour Gay Hussar, who is now trained at Washdyke for Mr W. Parsons, by F. Trilford, was expected to make a bold showing at Waimate, but once more gave trouble at the start, and was the last to leave when the barrier went up. This four-year-old gelding can boast of a turn of speed, but unfortunately is a difficult proposition to handle or to follow on race days. Spelled for Winter Platform, a two-year-old half-brother by Night Raid to Passaform, was given a race in'the Trial Plate at Waimate, and is now to be put aside until the spring. Passaform has been at Washdyke since he last raced. He was to be. treated for splint trouble, and had to miss the autumn racing. He is now considered to be sound again, but is to be given every chance, and will not be recommissioned until the early spring. Leading Horsemen With' nearly three-quarters of the season past, the position of the list of winning jockeys is very interesting and only four points separate the first three horsemen. These are W. Broughton 44, B. H. Morris 42, and H. Wiggins 40. The success of Broughton and Wiggins is remarkable when it is remembered that both have been out of the saddle for three months of the New Zealand season, Wiggins having just returned from a visit to Australia. W. Mudford has retained his place as leading apprentice, and is at present fourth on the list with 35 points. Then come P. Atkins 32, G. Tattersall 30, P. Spratt 29, W. F. Ellis 28,* G. Cameron 27, R. W. McTavish 26, W. Jenkins 24,. A. E. Ellis 24, L. Dulieu 24, A. Jenkins 23, L. J. Ellis 23, P. Burgess 22. T. Green 21, C. T. Wilson 21,A. C. Messervy 19, E. V. Dye 19, S. Waddell 18, C. G. Goulsbro 17, O. Evans 17, W. Stevens 16, R. Marsh 15, and H. J. Stewart 14. Philcourt Destroyed While galloping with Dauber at Taira'nini last week, Philcourt, by Philamorfrom Lady Marie, broke a fetlock and was destroyed. The loss is a severe one for her owner, Mr G. Courtney, as Philcourt, who is partial to soft tracks, was expected to race well during the winter. It is a coincidence that Philcourt makes the third of the progeny of the brood mare Lady Marie to suffer in this manner, the others being Gay Sheik, by Gay Shield, who broke

a shoulder while racing in Australia, and Marie’s Acre, by Acre, who broke a fetlock while racing at Paeroa early in the season. Philcourt was involved in the memorable Great Northern Guineas contest last year, when he suffered interference in the incident involving Gay Son and Hot Box, and which subsequently resulted in the reversing of the placings giving Hot Box the decision. Philcourt had previously won the Avondale Guineas. This season, Philcourt had started in 16 races for a first, two seconds, and a third, his success being in the Puketaha Handicap at the Waikato summer meeting. Earlier in the term he was second to Hot Box in the Poland Cup at Paeroa, and'filled a similar place behind Very Glad in the Members’ Handicap at the Waikato Hunt Club meeting on Labour Day. Phllcourt’s last race was the Islington Handicap at the Auckland Easter meeting, in which he finished third to Bronze Moth and Pocket Venus. '

Winning Strain J B. Pringle has taken in hand a two-year-old filly by Rey de Oro from Pat Dillon, the dam of Garner and Loyal Pat. At the moment this filly does not appear to be far advanced, but she carries a good deal of quality and promises to be an attractive type when in a more forward condition. Her dam, Pat Dillon, is a half-sister to a great pacer in Tom Thumb, and the successes achieved by Garner, an outstanding trotter, and Loyal Pat have indicated that this filly comes from a family of fine winners. Looking Well , Llewellyn’s Pride is among the regular workers at Addington, and although it is a considerable time since he displayed form in Keeping with his hest, he is looking remarkably well at the moment. At one period of. his career Llewellyn’s Pride appeared likely to reach the best classes, but he could do no better than reach the fringe of that company, and only one minor placing came his way last season. However, he is again showing something of his old dash, and it is hoped that he will stage a return to form. Back in Work L. O. Thomas has recommissioned Otaua and Embassy, and both look in excellent order after their recent spells. Otaua, who had to be put aside some time ago because of a bruised hoof, is carrying plenty of condition and it will not be long before he is again ready to race. At his best he is a good pacer, and one well capable of showing to advantage under winter conditions. Embassy is a novice performer by Worthy Bingen from Queen Elizabeth, a good mare, some seasons back, and he is an attractive mover. He started a few times last season without being placed, but his trainer has not hurried his preparation and he is being giVen every chance to mature. New Derby Two-year-olds Although unsuccessful during his short visit to New Zealand in 1937, New Derby proved himself a good racehorse and one who would have done exceptionally well here had he been more sound. A number of his stock, the result of a limited season of stud duty here, are now putting in an appearance and the majority have pleased to this stage. All are two-year-olds. One, a filly from Native Queen, has done a good deal of work at Addington, and she has reached a point where she is attracting attention, being a good mover of undoubted quality. G. Mouritz is also handling one of New Derby’s stock, a colt from Bon Rey. This is an exceptionally fine young horse. A bright bay with black points, he has the appearance of a class performer. At the moment he is being put through the first stages of his education, but if appearances count for anything it will not be long before he is displaying promise in his track work. He impresses as a natural pacer, and one likely to show early speed. Uenuku Again Amiss Having his first drive since returning from his trip to the inter-Dominion championship trotting meeting at Perth, R. A. McMillan drove Rama Direct in the Introductory Handicap at Cambrdige, and the novice pacer, although. suffering from barrier shyness, revealed fine speed, which proiiiised well for a useful career later on. McMillan’s bad luck with Uenuku at the Perth meeting followed him home, as

the brilliant pacer, who made a splendid recovery from the shoulder complaint that kept him from racing after scoring two attractive victories, is now suffering from an attack of strangles, says the “New Zealand Herald.” While in Sydney on his way home McMillan attended meetings at Harold Park and witnessed the fine duel between the Walla Walla youngsters, Western Wirra and Prejudice, in the run-off of the pacers’ division of the Sydney Sapling Stakes, which Western Wirra won in 3min 17 3-ssec. The same day another Walla Walla two-year-old, Walotus, won the trotters’ division of the Stakes. McMillan also saw the Mardella-bred Kin_, Oro beat a good field in the Harold Park Handicap, and was impressed with the performance. He was also impressed with several pacers by Minton Derby, winner of the 1922 Auckland Trotting ''’up, in which McMillan was second with Comedy Chief.
