HIGH MEMBERSHIP ROLL
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION With a membership ladder of 3375, the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association continues to hold second place on the New Zealand branch membership ladder, , according to a report presented at a meeting of the Christchurch executive last evening. The president (Mr A. E. Haynes) presided. “At this beginning of a new year our branch continues to be on the upgrade,” said Mr Haynes. “Our membership is second only to that of Auckland, whose number is 3500, and is well ahead of both Wellington, with 2873, and Dunedin, with 2662. At the present time we have received 220 more subscriptions than we had at the same date last year, and our total membership shows an increase of 900 on that of last year.” The report of the employment committee stated that there had been 336 registrations for the fortnight ended April 20 the same number as for the same period last year. Work subsidised had cost £l4 16s 6d, being provided for 51 men for 49 days, as compared with 61 men for 49 days, costing £ls 16s Gd. Fourteen days work without subsidy had also been found.
