METHVEN SHOW

GOOD ALL-ROUND STOCK DISPLAY EXCELLENT EXHIBIT OF ROOTS •Oie twenty-eighth annual show of the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association on Saturday was held in ideal weather, and there was a large attendance 01 district people. The attendance, however was barely as large as that of last vear due no doubt to the petrol restrictions’ preventing the attendance of farmers from further afield. The gate takings were £ll7. as gainst £129 last year. The Methven sh«w 5s always well conducted, fudging being kept up to schedule, and under the presidency of Mr W. E. Hampton and the secretaryship of Mr J. F . Stone there was n a departure from this reputation on Saturday. The show is notable for the good disnlavof sheep and of all sections of horses Srethven is not a dairying district, and this department is always light, hut on +h? other hand its agricultural dominance it to make a fine show of draught wsifand of field roots and vegetables, vrnm the appearance of the roots and vegetables cm Saturday the district has been more fortunate climatically than most others in the province this year. Sheep The total sheep entry was smaller than th at 0 f last year, a natural result of the ™or season down country. Nevertheless there was a display of good-class sheep, although one or two of the sections provided little competition. English Leicesters provided a duel between McDonald Bros, and R. J. Low. tXo divided the championships. The Border awards were divided amongst Colonel t Findlay, R. J- Low, and S. G. Lemon. The champion ribbons were won by Colonel Findlay, and the reserves between thP other two exhibitors. Four breeders fiUed toe Romney section-A F. Marr D. Tphnstone F. P. Cookson, and A. N. Gngg, Johnstone, r. tQok ribbon f the best ram. and F. P. Cookson for the ewe the reserves going to A. N. Gngg (for rams) and A. F. Marr (for ewes). Southdowns were the largest section, comprising 50 odd head, and the quality was. generally exceptionally good. The Sblol for males was taken by T. F. Hight and the reserve by J. D. Galpin, and the corresponding awards for ewes by T. F. Eight and W. E. Moorhead. The double champion win of Mr Hight in such a good section was notable. L. J. and S. W. Galletly were the only exhibitors in the Ryeland section. The small display of Corrledales contained some good sheep. jj Johnstone took both championships, and T, F. Hight and J. H. Patterson the re Flock S ’ewes drew a good entry In the vounger classes, and the awards were well distributed. In the fat .sheep section J E Harris scored a heavy run of successes Fat lambs made a big display considering the poor fattening season, and there were some outstanding pens. The heaviest prize-taker was G. S. Campbell, whose wins included the two freezing . companies’ specials for pens of three export lambs. there being 26 and 25 entries ' respectively in the two classes. Horses Although the draught horse entry was slightly down in numbers on that of last year there was brisk competition amongst several well-known breeders. The district always makes a good display of draughts, and Saturday’s was fully up to the usual standard. The main prizetakers were D. and W, E, Hampton, who took the female championship with Stormlea Jean, the reserve going to the evergreen Myra Everest, shown by R. A. Oakley., The stallion ribbon was secured by B. D. Steffens and Son. The association is well endowed with cups and trophies given by breed societies and supporters of the Clydesdale. D. and W. E. Hampton figured prominently in- the competition for these. Hackneys made the usual strong display. all the classes providing keen competition: The champion was Mrs A. G. Holmes’s Kerry,» and L... J. Fechney s Acena took the reserve. There were many new horsey in the display, and most of them; were splendid types of weightcarrying hacks which will be more widely 7 'rivh at future show gatherings. There e 59 entries in the seven classes, so thlu the honours were not easily won. The hunting display was one of the best seen at any show this season. In the carded classes there was only an odd horse which ran off, and most of the competitors negotiated the hurdles with a minimum of “raps.” The champion was Mrs A. G. Holmes’s Peter Pie. Ponies also made a strong numerical display, and awards were not easily , secured. Champion saddle pony was Joan Hanrahan’s Toby, and champion harness Lilley Bros.’ Starmeta.
