ROWING

UNION CLUB EFFECTS OF WAR ON THE SPORT Concern for the prospects of rowing during the period of war was expressed by several speakers at the annual smoke concert of the Union Rowing Club on Saturday evening. The president (Mr W. G. Atack) said that through the outbreak of the war Christchurch clubs had already lost a number of prominent mempers. this accounting to a large extent for last season , being somewhat disappointing. Every regatta received much less support than usual, he added, and it was likely that the activities of clubs would be further reduced next season. Mr R. E. Nightingale, of the Canterbury Rowing Association said it was regrettable that there had been a falling off in rowing. This might be due in a small degree to a slump in popularity, but the principal reason was the outbreak of war. The position was likely to become more serious in the ensuing seasons. Proposing the toast of "The Union Rowing Club,” Mr Atack said that although the club gained fewer successes than usual, the season had been a happy one. He congratulated Messrs C. A. Cooper and J. T. Harris on winning the New Zealand championship pairs title These two members, he added, won eight events out of the 11 in which they competed. Mr Atack also congratulated the Canterbury College .crew on its success in the university championship. Mr Cooper (captain) responded on behalf of the Union Club. Other toasts were:—"The Canterbury Rowing Association.” proposed by Mr J. T. Harris and responded to by Messrs R. E. Nightingale and R. J. Hobbs, and “Sister Clubs," proposed by Mr L.
