WOMEN’S PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

WIN FOR MISS Z. HUDSON The final of the Canterbury -women’s provincial championship was played at the Shirley course on Saturday morning between Miss Z. Hudson (Christchurch) and Miss Cicely Holmes, of Methven. and resulted in a win for Miss Hudson. The scoring was not remarkable. Miss Hudson especially being uncertain on the greens in the earlier stages of the match. Miss Holmes was bunkered with her drive at the first hole, which was won by Miss Hudson in 4; the second was halved, and Miss Hudson won the short third in 3. Then Miss Holmes won three holes in succession and stood 1 up. At the seventh she was stymied and hit her opponent s ball into the hole, giving Miss Hudson a win and squaring the match. Miss Hudson won the eighth in 4 and another stymie cost Miss Holmes the ninth, which was halved. Turning 1 up. Miss Hudson had the better of the game on the homeward journey, and the match ended at the fifteenth where Miss Holmes pulled Tier drive and Miss Hudson took the hole in 3 and the match 4 and 3. Miss Hudson was runner-up in the provincial championship last year, when she was beaten by Miss Valmai Fleming, who was not a competitor this year. She has won the Banks Peninsula and the Ashburton open championship, and in October last year she won the open tournament played at Shirley. Her handicap is 5. In the Shirley Trophy match, played on handicap. Miss Joan Whitcombe, receiving 10 strokes, beat Miss K. Johnston in the final 4 and 2. ■ , Mr M. H. Godby was referee for the championship match and Mrs E. J. Humphrey for the Shirley Trophy match. The Islington Cup mixed foursome match, for which there was a very large entry, was won by Missi Jean Robertson, a promising young Westport player, and L. J. Moorhouse with a score of 2 up. After the match Sir Cyril Ward, president of the Christchurch Golf Club, congratulated th,e Ladies’ Club on the success of its tournament and the prizewinners on their good play. He expressed pleasure at the presence of a good contingent of players from Westport and of representatives from as far north as Tauranga and as far south as Invercargill.
