RACING AND TROTTING

TUKF GOSSIP

At Westport The programme for the Westport Jockey Club’s annual meeting to be held on March 16 and 18 has been circulated. A total of £I4OO in stakes has been allotted, the principal event on the first day being the Centennial Handicap, of £l5O. one mile and a quarter, and on the second day the Morley Handicap, of £l3O, one mile. Nominations for all events will close on February 27. Purchase for Greymouth Tire North Islander. Lifeguard, has been purchased by a Greymouth sportsman, and will do his Easter racing on the West Coast. Lifeguard is an eight-year-old chestnut horse by Chief Ruler from Nasselle,.by Nassau. Last season he had 21 starts for five wins and three seconds. In the previous season, he had 11 starts for two seconds and a third; in the 1936-37 season nine starts for one first, three seconds, and a third. Lifeguard is a good sprinter, and should go a middle distance on the West Coast tracks. He has been trained in recent seasons by H. Dulieu at New Plymouth. Expensive to Follow Wings of Sonfe .is not turning out as good as expected. He had a big weight at Hawera last week, but a good horse should carry weight over five furlongs among the hacks. A Popular Jockey The death of W. Lappin, the apprentice jockey, from injuries received when, he was throv n from his mount in a race at Randwick on Saturday, has caused regret in the racing world, says a cable message from Sydney. Nearly 20,000 persons, including almost every Sydney jockey and racing identity, filed past the bier in the Darling- ' hurst chapel yesterday afternoon and night. Leading racing men paid the highest tributes to Lappm’s ability ana character. Other jockeys paid tribute to him as the best . pprentice in Australia. Lappin 'started riding in January, and had ridden 160 winners. The Grand- National Apparently it was only after some effort that permission was secured to run the Liverpool Grand National this •Year at, Aintree. In a speech at Manchester in December, Sir Warren Fisher, Regional Commissioner - for the North-western Region, said: “I have had trouble with gloomy authorities, m London about getting some horseracing. But we are going to have the Grand National at Aintree.” With the requisite permission obtained, a programme was drawn up for the Liverpool spring meeting, the dates being selected as April 4. 5, and 6, and nominations were called for the usual schedule, including the Grand National and the Liverpool Spring Cup. , . •• The Grand National entries were taken early last , month, and the satisfactory response of 59 nominations was made. The number is only 10 fewer than last year, 20 fewer than 1938, and one short of the 1937 figure. The peak years were 1928 and 1929, when the entries were respectively 112 and 121. ■ However, no one in England wanted a . repetition of 1929, when there were 66 starters, which brought about constant changing of the conditions of the race. Staying Blood If New Zealand does not continue to breed stayers it will not be because breeders are not importing sires with the right blood. Martian, Kilbroney; and others have gone, but their daughters are breeding on, and there are plenty of mares, with Musket and St. Simon blood. Among - the sires imported during recent years are Baffles, Bulandshar, Blandonian, and SolicitorGeneral, all by Blandford; Foxbridge, Foxlight, Posterity, Siegfried, of - the Son-in-Law family; Defoe, Lord Warden, Hunting Song, by Hurry On; Man’s Pal, by ■ Manna; Tiderace, by Fairway; Salmagundi, Phaleron Bay, and Myosotis, by Phalaris; Night Raid, by Radium; Lord Quex, by Lemberg; St. Boswells and Vermeer, by Solario, * and others. A Quick Return' , - 1 Some time ago the well-known studmaster Mr Herbert Thompson, of Tarwyn Park, Rylstone (New - South Wales), presented a Brazen filly as first i prize in the Rylstone Hospital art union. The filly- was won by a school teacher, Mr J. D. Tolhurst of Rylstone, who put her into the ring at a sale of bloodstock conducted by Mr Clive Inglis, at Rosebery racecourse. Mr Inglis explained that Mr Tolhurst was nbt a racing man, and did not desire to keep the filly. Bidding was slow for a start, until : Mi • Inglis remarked ■ that possibly late-comers to school on the morrow jwould be faced with an angry schoolmaster if the filly was not purchased. That started the competition for her, and she became the property of the Rosehill trainer A. G. Papworth for 100 guineas. v Another Trip '. Though Beau Vite would appear to - have the two St. Legers in the Dominion at his mercy, Mr R. Stewart "has now decided to send his champion back to Australia for thq autumn . racing. Mr Stewart-believes that the colt was not seen to his full advantage in the Commonwealth during the spring, and he is anxious that he should • have the opportunity of showing himself the champion three-year-old of the season in Australia and New Zealand. Tentative 'plans have been made to ship Beau Vite across the Tasman during the next fortnight. ; He Will enter the stable of F. McGrath at Kensington, and after a few days’ rest in' Sydney will be sent down to Melbourne, wher_ his first race will probably be in the Victoria Racing Club St. Leger, on March 5. .

OWNERS AND TRAINERS. Do you want to be certain that your horse will leave the barrier and see out the distance? If so, consult GEORGE SETTLE, Consulting Chemist,. 769 Colombo street, Christchurch. Call or write arid give fall particulars. GEORGE BETTLE has had oyer 20 years’ experience with racehorses.

Well-Bred Sprinter The Iliad—Set Sail three-year-old filly Southern Sail, a winner at Gpre on Saturday, is highly regarded in the south. At the Gore spring meeting Southern Sail 8-2 was third to Mondello 8-1 and Heidelberg 9-3. In her next start Southern Sail 7-12 was third to Scarteen 8-3 and Turncoat 7-8 in the Trial Handicap at Wingatui. In the Novice Handicap run on the second day she was beaten a head by Bacewell, and at Wyndham on New Year’s Day ran third to Pink Bond and Islay Downs. . A Great Pacer . x ' While the actual time registered by Logan Derby in running fourth, in the First Division of the Inter-Dominion Championships is not known the pony pacer probably registered better than 2min 6sec for the mile, which is better than anything, recorded in New Zealand from a standing start. LOgan Derby finished third, only 10 feet behind the winner, Main Derby, who recorded 2min 7issec, and received 24 yards start. In the second division Logan Derby won after recording a mile rate of, 2min 9sec over a mile arid a half. Logan Derby is possibly the smallest pacer, engaged in the championships and standing only 15 hands he is a midget beside the West Australian Will o’ the Wisp, who is 17.1 hands. , ■

TROTTING NOTES

Reminder Acceptances for the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on. Saturday, will close to-morrow at 5 p.m. Cheviot T.C. The Cheviot Trotting Club has received permission to hold its annual meeting on the North Canterbury Racing Club’s course at Rangiora on March 16. For years past the Cheviot Club has found a difficulty in catering fon its many patrons with its present appointments, but, a meeting at Rangiora should attract a record crowd. The programme, which is already in circulation, provides a stake of £225 in the Cheviot Cup. which is for 4min 47sec class two mile horses. Nominations will- close on March 1. Answer to Correspondent Sapper, Ashburton: (1) No. At Methven. (2) Wrackeen was unplaced. Wrackler was third. (3) Yes. (4) Two’s Loose won the Sapling Stakes in 3nun 26sec, and the Derby in :3min 20sec. Barrier Practice ' . • Mr A. J. Hastings will be in attendance -at New Brighton at 9 a.m. today, and will exercise horses at the barrier on the course proper. A Spent Light Indianapolis has been accorded, a nomination in the Jubilee Handicap at New Brighton, and while he is well past his best, a handicap of 48 yards would have proved a severe test over a mile and a half at any stage of his career. He is set to dp 3min 14sec, and allowing that the limit horses can improve on their handicaps of 3mm 18sec, the old-time champion would have a big task in front of him. On anything Indianapolis has shown in his few appearances during the last two seasons, the limit horses in this race, if handicapped on their merits, would be conceding Indianapolis a start. A Tricky Track Track conditions at Addington on Saturday did not suit C. S. Donald s horses, Labour Day. Tan John, and Accountant, and the Belfast trainer wisely withdrew them from their, engagements. He started Hamel Bey, Bepeal and Jackaranda, but not one of the three handled the going with any confidence. A Good Stayer s Zingarrie is not altogether a good barrier horse, but a good stayer, he should be well placed in the Birthday Handicap at New In this race he will start from the limit of a 3min 30sec class. He registered a good performance at Addington on Saturday when he finished third to Old Faithful and Wainoni Girl. Shadow Son ■ At one stage Shadow Son looked like developing into a high-grade; pacer, but while he won the New Brighton Challenge States in October, 1938, his few appearances since then have not marked him as a’ champion. One of the few of the progeny of Red Shadow racing, Shadow Son will have further chances to show, his worth. MANAWATU T.C. ACCEPTANCES
