TURF GOSSIP

Racing at /Trentham Tix ? weather at Trentham yesterday was brilliantly fine with a blazing sun, and last night there was every indication of a fine day lor the opening of the Wellington Centennial, meeting. The track appeared to be in excellent order, and the promises to be the best at a summer meeting for a long time past, A Well-bred Pair '

One of the early buyers at Trentham yesterday was Mr J. R. McKenzie, who paid 160 guineas for a colt by Hazrat, who is by Craig an Eran from Duxford, by Swynford. The dam.'Azecta, is a half-sister to-Horomea. the dam of Terry, Mittie, and Lady Tinkle, .Mr McKenzie later secured for 400 guineas a well-grown filly by Foxbridge from Drama, dam of Allspree and Millament. A Prominent Si -

A feature of yes-erday's sale at Trentham was the keen demand for youngsters by Nightmarch. A brother to Russian Ballet headed the list with 625 guineas, and next -was a. colt from Variant, -who brought 525 guineas. Mr A. Louisson's. four Nightmarch youngsters realised 1470 guineas—a reasonable price. Mr D. Grant's purchase at Trentham yesterday is closely related to Charmeuse, and was considered one of the bargains of the day. A Double Cross

In addition to his early purchase yesterday, Mr H. D. Greenwood secured a grey filly by Theio from Queen Salute, who has interesting breeding. Theio is by Tetratema, who is by The Tetrarch, and Queen Salute is by Chief Ruler, who is also by The Tetrarch. Below Expectations

Mr E. Hay's only purchase at yesterday's sale was a colt by Man's Pall from Vennachar, dam of Scratchmere Scar. His price of 230 guineas was, a { a good deal below what was expected for him. A colt by the same sire from Knocklyn,' dam of Lord Lynn, and sold in the same interests, also seemed reasonable at the 200 guineas paid for him by Mr E. F. Ward, formerly of Methven, but now of Wellington. Mr W. H. Ward, of Christchurch, also figured as a buyer after being out of the game for a long while, his purchase being a colt by the Blandford horse Baffles from the Martian mare Martulla, a sister to Tortrix and dam of Old Surrey and others.

TROTTING NOTES

1-A Reminder Second forfeits for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes (1940) must be declared by 5 p.m. on Monday. Auckland Trotting Club The Auckland Trotting Club will hold its next meeting on February 10 and • 14. The big attractions will be the Great Northern Derby of £SOO and the Great Northern Trotting Stakes of £4OO, for which the final payment must be made by January 26. The principal handicap events are the Otahuhu Handicap of £403. 3min 24sec class, of a mile and a half, and the Alexandra Handicap of £4OO, 4min 34sec class, two miles. Nominations will close at 5 p.m. on January 26.

Benefit Trotting Meeting ■?• "The enthusiasm and the" willingness to help in this cause have been an eye.opener to me," said Mr T. G. Fox to a representative of "The Press" yesterday when discussing the prospects for the benefit meeting to be held on Saturday, "and I am confident that- this turn-out will be one of the best of its kind ever held in Christchurch. It was with some diffidence that members of the Owners' and Breeders' Association approached different firms arid individuals for assistance, in providing the prizes; but the response has been exceptional, and patrons will realise this when they see on display the grand collection of trophies, which, at the conclusion of the racing, will be presented to the successful owners, trainers, and drivers by the Mayor of i Christchurch. Mr R. M. Macfarlane, iM.P."; The list includes a silver cup .valued at 25 guineas, which will go > to the winner of the flying mile, racing speed cart, sets of harness, case of cutlery. Doulton dinner service, tea and ! coff' . services, stop-watches, wristlet watches, whips, rugs, and boots of all descrintions. The Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association and the Auctioneers' Association have joined forces with the Owners' and Breeders' Association, and their principal task will be the running of numerous sweeostakes. The meeting will be run without much expense, for all .officials have given-.their services free. The racing will commence at 1 p.m., and without the totalisator the programme will be got through as quickly as possible. The sportsmen of Canterbury have entered into the spirit of the carnival with commendable zest, and the public may be assured .of excellent entertainment provided within a reasonable period. On the Easy List Cantata, Blair Athol, and Donald Dhu were all let up in their work after the Christmas and New Year racing, and this is the reason for their absence from events at the matinee and For- j bury Park meetings. All three, however, will probably be seen out at either Canterbury Park or New Brighton.

Unhoppled Trotters The Vauxhall Handicap, the opening event on the Forbury Park Trotting Club's programme, includes the material for a very fine race, for a number of the unhoppled trotters engaged have shown good form in the last few months. The field is well together, for. with the .exception of a really good trotter in Reception, who is on 72 yards, a limit-of/36 yards covers the field. Reception is as reliable as they are made, and even a handicap of 72 yards may not be beyond his ppwers. It is to the better treated horses, however, that success will probably go and those with good prospects include Blonfield, Houghton Feast, Princess Beverley. Reta's Own. Anna's Voyage, and Judgment, any one of which may be expected to improve on its assessment. Of this number the best may prove Reta's Own, Judgment, and Houghton Feast. . Bocks Ahead Rocks Ahead is "to make one of her last appearances at the Forbury Park meeting, and her recent mile in 2min 5 3-ssec suggests that she is as well as ever she has been. Earlier in the season Rocks Ahead was mated with the imported stallion, Quite Sure. Two-Year-Olds

It is yet early in the season for two-year-old racing but a good field Will be seen out in the Two-year-old Parade at the benefit meeting. Realising that a race over a mile for horses of such tender age is not in the best interests the association has arranged for a dash over a little more than six furlongs. This will give the public an opportunity to see the start as well as the finish of the race. Three trophies will be awarded and competition is very keen.

YEARLING SALES

HIGHEST PRICE, 2000 GUINEAS A SATISFACTORY CLEARANCE [From Our Own Reporter]

WELLINGTON, January 17. The fourteenth annual national sale of thoroughbred yearlings was held at Trentham to-day, and although the attendance of ringsiders was considered satisfactory, it was below that of recent years. The representation from Australia was confined to a few 1 uyers and were once again responsible for good prices being secured for the high-class yearlings offered. , , There were 221 lots catalogued, and of these 133 were sold, several being passed in, while there were several withdrawals. The total realisation was' 28,410 guineas or an average of 213| guineas. Last year the 210 lots made 137 sales and totalled 33,685 guineas or an average of 247 guineas, while the previous year the average was 261 guineas. Under the circumstances the result of to-day's sale was considered very satisfactory, and outstanding youngsters in breeding and looks aroused the interest of bidders. Titers was a larger number than usual of unattractive lots and in some cases breeders had the experience of seeing their entries go through the ring without any bids. Up to the lunch, adjournment the highest price was 700 guineas paid by Mr H. D. Greenwood for a colt by Foxbrldge from Rose Latour by General Latour from Wee Hose by Wairiki from Miss Rose by Dreadnought. This was the highest price until the later part of the afternoon, when a colt by Bulandshar from Tea Tattle by Tea Tray from Bouvardia, a sister to the dam of Cheval de Volee, was submitted. After some delay the' colt was started at 300 guineas, and quickly rose to 600 guineas, and then jumped to 1000 guineas, the bid of Mr C. Wheeler, of Adelaide, who was acting for Mr J. Wren, of Melbourne. He then went by 100 guinea bids to 1600 guineas, and from that figure to 1800 guineas, called by Mr J. T. Jamieson. Mr Wheeler immediately advanced to 2000 guineas, at which price he was. quickly cold. The next best price was 850 guineas for the Tiderace— My Own colt, half-brother to Yours Truly and brother to the youngster which topped last year's sale at 1450 guineas, and Is now in Jamleson's stable at Randwick. This colt will also probably finish up in Australia. The next best price of' the day was 800 guineas paid by a representative of Mr E. J. Watt, of Sydney, for a first foal from Gold Trail by Tiderace. bred at Te Mahanga. Jamieson secured a most attractive colt, by Foxbrldge from Speedmint, a Great Northern Oaks winner. The youngster was passed in at 650 guineas, with a reserve of 800 guineas, but J. T. Jamieson offered 750 guineas and secured him. Owing to business reasons, Mr R. Inglis, of Sydney, was unable to make the trip to carry out his usual role of auctioneer, and the work was carried out by Mr C. E. Robertson, who, striking a dragging market, gave every satisfaction and got through the record entry in remarkably good time. It was a strenuous day for all concerned, as the sale commenced about 9.45 a.m. and the last lot was disposed of at about 6.15 p.m. Details of the sale are as follows: , Gns.
