DOMINION BOWLS TOURNEY

POST-SECTION PLAY TWENTY-TWO REMAIN IN EVENT FOUR OF SIX FINALISTS PLAY OFF IN SINGLES CPBXSS ASSOCIATION TBLEGBAM.) WELLINGTON, January 17. Post-section play in the rinks championship of the New Zealand bowling tournament began this morning on -five greens. Forty-three rinks are competing. The programme to-day provided for three rounds of 21 heacjs, with a time limit of three hours. The day was full of surprises. The weather was perfect throughout, and the greens were in splendid condition. The conclusion of the day's three rounds found the number remaining in the event reduced to 22, comprising six two-lifers and 16 one-lifers. Of the two former holders of the rinks title, Naylor (Hataitai) has two lives, and Bremner (West End, Auckland) one life. Bremner suffered his defeat to McCarthy (Port Ahuriri), whose fine playing throughout all three rounds was a feature of the day. McCarthy was conspicuous for his accurate drawing. He held the advantage throughout most of the game against Bremner. > McCarthy also disposed of Munn (Canterbury) in the second round, and to defeat two players of such calibre is no mean feat. The Port Ahuriri team is among the two-lifers, and on to-day's form should stand an excellent chance of reaching the finals. Surprise Defeats Three surprise eliminations were those of Spearman (Sydenham), who went down to Russell (St. Heliers), and Bell (Tauranga); Munn (Canterbury), who suffered the second of'his two defeats to Bain (Marlborough R.S.A.); and Silbery (Petone), who was beaten by Naylor (Hataitai) and P. W. Smith (Thorndon). In the section play Silbery, with Hadwin (Hutt), and Munn, had won all eight games. Hadwin now has one life, losing his third round to Livingstone (Onehunga), who won all his events to-day. The third round match between Naylor (Hataitai) and Hazelwood (Lyall Bay) provided a dramatic finish. Naylor required five to tie on the final end. By nice play he got the five counters, and in the extra end secured the necessary single to win, 21-20. The following have two lives: —Livingstone, McCarthy, Bell, Naylor, Dickinson, Robinson. The following have one life:—Hadwin, Bremner. Bain, Kirkwood, Buchan, Greville, Russell, Hazelwood, Pavitt, P. W. Smith, Mitchell Bell. Christoffel, Cullen, Lobb, McWhannell.

The Morning's Play The following notes are on the morning's play:— Munn (Canterbury) maintained his unbeaten record in the rinks event when he beat Manning (Timaru) by a margin of three points. After 14 heads, Munn led 17-8, but his opponent scared 5 and 2 on the following two heads and was only one down on the ■ board at the eighteenth head. Singles in the last two heads gave Munn the victory. The Canterbury rink is a well-balanced one, and appears likely to reach the final stages. A noteworthy fact is that Munn won seven of his nine games in the rinks with the last bowl. Bremner (West End, Auckland) and Maslin (Hawera) provided an interesting game at the Wellington green. The teams were. on equal terms at the twelfth head, on which Maslin scored four, but Bremner then had a sequence, scoring 9 on the next six heads, and was 8 up on the board with three heads to go. The Hawera rink notched 5 on the last head to finish two points behind. Many believe Bremner's rink will reach the final. Marks (Christchurch), who has a good record in centre competitions, was beaten by Bain (Marlborough Returned Soldiers' Association). Without detracting from the fine performance of the winners, it must be mentioned that the Christchurch rink was right off form. Livingstone (Onehunga) always had a commanding lead against Besley (New Brighton), although 3 on the eighteenth head and 4 on the last head put the losers only three points behind their opponents.

Silbery (Petone) suffered his first defeat in the rinks when he went down to Naylor (Hataitai), previous holder of the title. Both rinks have fine performances to their credit, but on to-day's play Naylor's rink was definitely better and won by a margin of seven points. Spearman (Sydenham) also lost a life when he was beaten- by Bell (Tauranga), 22-14. Results:— First Round At Wellington—Livingstone (Onehunga) 26, Besley. Although Deare had a fairly easy win 21-9, on the eighteenth end against Smith, the game was very interesting.
