! RECRUITING ON WEST COAST : ' OFFICER TO VISIT PUBLIC I WORKS CAMPS | [From Our Own Reporter] GREYMOUTH, January, 16. Confidence that the quota of recruits from the district for the 2nd Echelon would be secured was expressed by Major M; Earle Johnson, M.C.. area officer of the Nelson-Marl-borough-West Coast military district, before he returned yesterday to Nelson after a short visit to Greymouth. The.success of the campaign for recruits in the district was largely due, he said, to the interest taken by the citizens and to the splendid co-opera-tion given by local bodies and various organisations. The Greymouth Recruiting Committee had achieved much in a very short time. Major Johnson also said that a recruiting officer was about to be appointed to visit all the c.amps ol the Public Works Department on the West Coast, with an officer of that department. The officers, whose visit might .not.' take place for some time yet, would meet the men in the camps who might wish to enlist, and also local bodies and recruiting committees and offer them help.

A quick response to the appeal fcr experienced men to form a forestry unit for service overseas has been received at Hpkitika. where 27 men had enlisted up to last evening - with. the Conservator of State Forests (Mr F. W. Foster), The formation of the unit was announced on Friday by the Commissioner of State Forests - (the Hon. F. Langstone), who said that the Government had accepted the invitation of the War Office to recruit 191 I experienced forest-workers in all ranks.
