NEW YEAR'S DAY SPORTS

SUCCESSFUL MEETING AT KAIKOURA

BUSHMEN'S EVENTS CANCELLED

The weather- was fine on New Year's Day for the gala sports conducted by the Kaikoura Athletic and 'Cycling Club, and a good" day's sport was seen by a fair attendance of the public. Because of the dearth of entries, the bushmen's events ■were eliminated from the programme. The cycle events were well contested, and the finishes close. In addition to the adult events, the children were well catered for, Messrs W. Laugesen, H. Hamilton, and J. J. Mackle being in charge of the numerous running events. Results were:— One Mile Cycle Handicap—First heat (7): C. Moran (40yds) 1, C. B. Wareham (scr) 2, H. J. Dalzeil (40yds) 3. Time, 2min 20sec. Second heat (7): W. Adair (50yds) 1, J. G. Laugesen 3. s FAREWELL TO SPECIAL FORCE MEMBERS DANCE AT KAIKOURA SUBURBAN There was a large and representative gathering of residents and friends at the farewell social arranged by the Kaikoura Suburban. Hall Committee on Saturday night in the Suburban Hall to bid farewell to Privates Hay Chapman and Austin Smith,.who are shortly leaving for overseas. Music-was supplied by Messrs .Ellis Scott (piano) and R. Clemett (drums), extras being played by Mrs R. Mahoney. Mr L. Grimwodd was master of ceremonies. During the evening Mr D. Manson (president of the- Suburban branch of the Labour Party) said that the evening had, been arranged to bid farewell to two -energetic members of the Hall Committee, "both having done their duty faithfully and well as committeemen, and he knew they would do their duty faithfully and well to their company. He spoke of the excellent work done by Private Smith as secretary of the branch of the Labour Party. He wished both soldiers godspeed and a" safe -re-, turn, and asked each to accept a shaving companion from the residents of Kaikoura Suburban. Mr Pi' S. Humm spoke for the Returned Soldiers' Association and wished thenv good luck and a safe and epeedy return. The recipients thanked the speakers for their kind remarks, for the gifts, and for the enjoyable evening arranged in their honour. FUNCTIONS IN HONOUR OF : i PRIVATE MONET ' \ * An evening arranged by friends and | was given in honour of Private E. Monk at the band room, Kaikoura, on Thursday night. Music for dancing -was supplied by Mrs W. D. Sabiston, and extras were played by Mrs R. Mahoney and Messrs W.. D. Sabiston, F. S. H. .Warner, and F. Galley. Messrs J. Monk and J. Lane were masters of ceremonies. Dr. R. Lan Withers wished Private Monk the best of luck and a safe return. All were proud of the boys who were leaving for the front, he said, and ■ all wished them well. For the residents of Kaikoura he asked Private Monk to accept a wristlet watch. Dr: Withers said it was unfortunate that their guest had Been unable, through illness, to be present at the public farewell held dn the previous Wednesday. On Friday morning at the Kaikoura Post and Telegraph Office, the Post and Telegraph and linesmen's staffs met to bid farewell to Private Monk. Mr T. J. Crowe said that all wished their fellow workman godspeed and a safe return. For the staff, he asked Private Monk to accept a fountainpen and a bottle of ink, which, he said, would serve .to remirid him of the hours spent with the staff, and that he would have no excuse for not writing home. PRESENTATION TO SCARGILL | VOLUNTEERS s —— ■ Residents of the Scargill-Motunau district recently gathered at the Scargill Hall to bid farewell to the soldiers of the district who will leave I New Zealand with the Ist Echelon of the Special Force. The men bidden farewell were Second-Lieutenant P. Markam. Privates - Duncan Stewart, j Ross Maxwell, W. Murray, Angus Gibb, C. Reardon. and D. McClintock. For the residents the chairman, Mr T. D. Mac Donald. presented each with a leather pocket wallet. Private Duncan Stewart responded for the' soldiers. A short concert programme was;. presented by Mrs E.' Foster, Mrs B. A. Coe, Mrs Meikle, Miss Patricia Foster, Mrs McEvedy, Messrs B. A. Nicholls, Douglas Hawker, and John Lyndsay, ■ Beatrice and Mavis Smith, and James. The evening concluded with dancing. AKAROA TENNIS CLUB HOLDS DANCE - Members df the.,Akaroa Lawn Tennis Club held. an..enjoyable danee m the Oddfellows' Hall, when * there--was a good attendance. CYCLE ROAD RACE AT KAIKOURA j The second of the series of road ! races organised by the road race committee of the Kaikoura Athletic and Cycling Club took place recently, and was watched by a large crowd.
