RACING AND TROTTING

TROTTING AT ADDINGTON

CANTERBURY PARK CLUB

GREAT JEWEL WINS HANDICAP For many years the Canterbury Park Trotting Club has been noted for the punctuality observed -in the running of its meetings, but yesterday the last race, timed to start at 4.55. was not started until' more than 50 minutes alter that time. The betting total for the day, £39,634 IDs, fell short of the £ 41,383 10s in rested at the meeting 12 months ago. The total for the two days'was £ 86,098," against £89,432 ’los last year, a decrease of £3334 10s. The weather in the early morning was not encouraging, but it cleared, and after the first race the track was in excellent order. The attendance was up to expectations, and specially fine racing was witnessed. In winning the Mason Stakes with Great Jewel. R.. B. Berry won the two principal events of the meeting, and the .Jewel Pointer pacer, with the assistance of the pace-making of the consistent Colonel Grattan, won very easily at the finish with a burst of speed that left most of the others hopelessly beaten. The time, 4min 20sec, from a 4min 28sec mark, puts Great Jewel in the champions’ class, and apparently R. B: Berry, with Great Jewel, Southern Chief, Parisienne, and Lucky Jack, has a team of champions that may become embarrassing. Berry, however, has exercised the greatest judgment in the. selection of horses, and not one had been a made horse before it came under his care; In Huguenot he pro-' , duced a four-year-old filly that had been gradually coming through its classes, and . acting as pacemaker throughout; she won the Middleton Handicap in the good time. of 3min 19 4-ssec. Apparently Berry is building Op another strong team for racing in the future. Another brilliant young p?cer. w 3 Ned Worthy, who. not a winner, gave a display in keeping with, early form, and with better luck in the running than he enjoyed yesterday he is likely to be heard of in good class company. Ned Worthy Is an exceptionally good pacer. '

Gerfalcon did 4min 27sec when he won the Hornby Handicap; and again he . was favoured, with an excellent rim, .while dead-heatirig with him was the erratic Timworthy, whose speed and unreliability have been features of his racing. . Fine Art was called on for a fighting effort when he defeated Blair Athol in the Selwyn Handicap, but it is possible " that both' would have' been ■beaten by- Southern Chief had he not made a bad mistake soon after striking his hopples-at the 'start of the'Selwyn Handicap. NOTES ON THE RACING

Greatly Improved Display , Premier gave a greatly improved display as compared with the first day, -when he won the Progressive Handicap ixz -the- . manner of.. r a' good trotter. .It was a distinct reversal o£ first day’s form, but Premier is a trotter that has imprpved with racing. Premier was actually the quickest to begin, and he led out from Reta’s. Own.Princess Beverley, and Judgment, who had made a quick beginning. With six furlongs covered Premier was still in front from Beta’s Own,’ Princess Beverley, Judgment, Bonhaven, and Anna’s Voyage following. Down the back-stretch Premier did not-appear to lose any advantage, and while Reta’s being pressed she could, make ho impression on the- leaderl: Premier was -first to the half-mile, first to the straight, and first to the post. He won in impressive style from Reta’s Own and Princess Beverley, and following were Bonhaven, . Anna’s Voyage, and Blonfield. ■ A Mile, in- Saddle Mankind won the Telegraph Handicap: after J. Bryce, jun., had shown the -other- -riders the way out of the barrier. .Mankind was in front from start to finish and won after outstaying the whole field, * Mankind was first away, from Loyal Pat. Aqua Bond-, and Sports Review, and with a- quarter of a mile- covered Recess, Aircraft, and Bing Crosby were following the leaders. The order was the same into the back stretch and round the top turn. At the entrance to the straight Mankind, Loyal Pat, Sports Review- and Aqua Bond was the order, and in the run to the post Mankind always held the upper hand to win easily from Sports Review, who outstayed Loyal Pat and Aqua Bond. The winner had 'run,; solidly on the first day. and deserved his win, while Sports Review ’ was another consistent pefibinher. \ Aquaßond gave a disappointing display After being well placed out and it was not'surprising to find; an inquiry alter theA'ace intorhik- running, but after an inquiry” the explanations of the trainer and rider. R. W. Townley and D. C. Watts, were accepted.* A Smart Pacer Huguenot, apparently improve’d. by her excellent race on the first day, was first out and first home in the Middleton Handicap. She fairly outstayed the field in a fast-run race. , ‘ . Club King. WainOni Girl, and Huguenot were first away from the barriers, and after; Club .King had led past the half-mile post. Huguenot took up the running from Shadow Qufeen, Wainoni Girl, Sentiment, Super Jack, and Reception. With a round to go Huguenot was showing the way to Club King, Shadow Queen, Wainoni Girl, Sentiment, and Super Jack. Ned Worthy, who had.not had a good run early.'put in a sensational dash and at the straight entrance was third to Huguenot and Shadow Queen. In the. straight Huguenot proved a good stayer and won with ease from Ned Worthy, whose effort in racing round a field and. finishing -on was the' work of a champion. Ned Worthy is a fine little pacer and will do still better. Shadow- Queen improved on her first day’s running. Club King had none the best of the running, but Waitemata stayed on the mark. Reception went

a great race, but may do a whole lot better when engaged in her right class amongst the unhoppled trotters. The Mason Stakes Great Jewel had all the best of the running in the Mason Stakes, but over the last half-mile he fairly outsprinted his field. He won with ridiculous ease and fairly outclassed a renowned sprinter in Colonel Grattan, Great Jewel was the best beginner, but his driver, R. B. Berry, was only too pleased to surrender the lead to Colonel Grattan, who carried on past the stands from Great Jewel, Lightning Lady, who had hobbled at the start, Rey Spec, Donald Dhu, and Cantata, and this was the order for another round, at which stage Pot Luck was in a handy position. Half a mile from home Great Jewel raced up to Colonel Grattan, and he. led into the straight, with Lightning Lady the only other in the running. At the distance Lightning Lady appeared likely to have a fighting chance, but while both were well beaten by Great Jewel Colonel Grattan held on to beat Lightning Lady. Next to finish were Plutus, Reknown’s Best, and Pot Luck. The majority of the starters were found out, and could hardly be compared in a class with the winner. Great Jewel won with ridiculous ease and auparentlv could have given all . the starters the concessions he received from them. A Dead-Heat At the end of the two miles in the Hornby Handicap the judge was unable to separate’ Gerfalcon and Timworthy. The latter, after being one of the pacemakers for a time, dropped in behind the leaders, but came with renewed dash at the end almost to steal victory on the post. ~ , Jenny’s Guy took up the early running, but soon Amonos raced to the lead with Jenny’s Guy, Ganton.and Timworthy following, but a. mile had been covered ’ Timworthy was well in front from Mohican, Ganton. Franz Derby, and Gerfalcon. The last-named had picked up; a lot of ground, and with six furlongs to go Timworthy had a nice lead from Amonos, Mohican, Franz Derby, Jenny’g Guy, Gerfalcon, and Tan John, Half a mile from home Timworthy was still in front from Mohican and Jenny’s Guy, and with Gerfalcon improving his position he took the lead from Timworthy shortly after the entrance to the straight. Gerfalcon was ih front at the disatnee,. but Timworthy, coming with a rare burst at the finish, got up to dead-heat with Gerfalcon. Ganton, with a great burst at . the end, got up to beat Franz Derby. Aristotle, Jenny’s Guy, and Lament. It was a- splendid performance on the part of Tim worthy and Gerfalcon and their drivers, F. Holmes and M. Holmes. Timworthy probably owed his position at the finish to -a clear run that he received on the rails inside Franz Derby in the early stages. Gerfalcon’s two . miles in 4min 27sec represented a great go from a 4min 36sec mark. Tan John did not get near the leaders after a good beginning, but to have won he would need to have covered a lot of ground. Fine Art Improves In the light, of recent performances Fine Art was surprisingly well supporred" in the Selwyn Handicap; and tJois tone there was no suggestion of the breaking he showed in the peculiar going at Ashburton and again on the opening day of the Canterbury Park meeting. The Selwyn Handicap was run over a mile and a quarter, but the difference in the distances could Hardly - account for the difference in form. The public in this case was entitled to an explanation from the judicial stewards.. After some, delay at the start, Frisco Boy and Southern Chief went away together, but almost immediately the latter broke up and dropped to the rear of the field. This left Frisco Boy out in front of Navy Blue, George Rey, and Fine Art, and at the end bf - half a mile the order was Frisco Boy and George Rey, with Navy Blue and Fine Art racing together just ahead of Blair Athol'and Pot Luck. Three furlongs from home Fine Art took the lead and he was first into the ’ straight from Frisco Boy, George Rey, Blair Athol, and Southern Chief, who had made a sensational run. Blair Athol joined in the fight with Fine Aft over the last hundred yards, and in a great race Fine Art won by a head. Next was Southern Chief, who was followed by Navy Blue, Renown’s Best, and Pot Luck. ..Fine Art and Blair Athol fought out the finish' like good racehorses. The latter , has always proved genuine and the former on occasions has shown real class. A Coming Champion Accountant showed «his real quality when he won the Prebbleton Handicap in the good time of Smin 141-ssec from a 3min 27sec mark. It was a performance that showed the excellence of the track. Becky Direct at once set out- to make the running ’"'from Golden-Moness, . Coquette, Stylish Boy, Slippery Sam, and Yankeeland. Golden Mist put in a great'run at the end of .a round, and at the beginning of the last round Yankeeland,' Golden, Mist, , Slippery Sam, Stylish Boy, and • Coquette: .was the order, while Accountant was quickly running into . good position. At the straight entrance Golden Mist was just in front of Yankeeland and Slippery Sam,. but Accountant was in a handy position. In the . run to the post Accountant outclassed the rest and won nicely from Slippery Sam who, with Colonel Axworthy, put in a, great finishing run. Regal also finished with great dash and was close up fourth, while the next in order were Aldershot, Golden Mist, arid Becky Direct. \ The performance of Accountant marked him as a really good racehorse and he finished in the manner of a .true, stayer. In the early stages Accountant was not well placed, and it was only three furlongs from home when on the. outside of several horses he appeared to be in the running. Slippery Sam’s effort was a good one, and the double-figure dividend he returned was a reward for the perseverance of his trainer, J. Davidson;

NOTES ON THE RACING Lockit Prevails Lockit showed that his two races at Waikouaiti had not affected him by recording a comfortable win in the HighWeight Handicap. He followed Half and Half and Twenty Grand into the straight, and when Twenty Grand- weakened he ran up to Half and Half, and after a brief tussle with him drew away. Sir Hugh put in a solid finishing effort to get within a length of Half and Half. Twenty Grand was a poor fourth, in front of Silver Slipper and Dranoel. Favourite Beaten Great Night, who drew No. 1 at the barrier, was made favourite for the Trial Stakes, but • failed to move out smartly and was well back turning for home. He

were well beaten half-way through the race. J. Fraser’s Third Win The Addington trainer, J. Fraser, principally through his excellent reinsmanship, won the Final Handicap from infinitely better horses in Nelson Eddy, Quest, and Fremont. Harlequin and Harold Guy at once struck ' the front, and had as their , nearest attendants Wee Potts, Repeal, Nelson Eddy, Quest, Worthy Need, and Subsidy. J. Fraser drew the whip on Harold Guy to keep his good position, and he had a slight advantage of Harlequin into the back stretch, where the most prominent of the others were Repeal, Wee Potts, Nelson Eddy, Quest, and Worthy Need. The order of the leaders was the same into the straight, and in a close running field Nelson Eddy was still hemmed in on the railsWhile Harold Guy was, being hard driven 100 yards from the posh Nelson Eddy found an opening and he put in a great run. The distance was all too short, however, and Harold Guy struggled home a narrow winner, with Quest, another fast finisher, just in front of Fremont, Wee Potts, Harlequin, and Subsidy. / Fraser, behind Harold Guy; won the . race by gaining, an early position and keeping it. Other drivers had: the op-r portunity but failed to realise the traps ijv a dose running field.

made a marked effort -in the straight, but failed to overhaul the two pacemakers, Rosaleen Dhu and Craiglea, who fought out a long struggle l , Rosaleen Dhu winning narrowly. Great Night was a close third, and was followed three lengths away by Ageratum and Johnemby. Homing stood at the barrier and took no part in the race. Scenic Gem Wins Durability, favourite for the Waikaura Trot, went to the front half a mile from home and had a useful lead entering the straight from Lyrola. Scapa Flow, Scenic Gem, and Kurow Belle. Scenic Gem challenged Durability a furlong from home and gradually overhauled him to beat him fairly comfortably. Kurow Belle was a close third, clear of Scapa Flow and Lyrola. Ben Wyvis and William Potts broke up at the start. Night Dress’s Handicap

The finish of the President’s Handicap was mainly confined to Night Dress and Rabble. The former was first out, and Rabble was last to leave the mark. Night Dress was steadied going into the back stretch and Kilrobe ran to the front. Kilrobe had a clear advantage entering the straight from Night Dress. Montessa, The Wrecker, and Ratable. Kilrobe did not last long, and Night Dress shot to the front. Rabble then emerged and issued a determined challenge. In an interesting tussle Night Dress always held Rabble safe and won in an attractive manner. Balmenter surprised by. finishing on into third place, two lengths in front of The Wrecker and Parquet. Night Dress was ridden an excellent race, and made amends for his close defeat in the Waikoualti Cup. His task, however, was made easier by Rabble losing valuable ground at the start. Montessa and Kilrobe both failed badly. Passenger Surprises

Scarteen was confidently supported to win the Waitaki Hack Handicap, but was badly placed turning for home and could not improve his position to any extent in the straight. Passenger followed up his promising .form at Waikouaiti by leading the field throughout. He was followed three lengths away into the straight by Blazealong, Mosgiel. Racewell, Twenty Grand. and Scarteen, . and although challenged strongly by MoSglel and Twenty Grand in the closing stages, he 'was able to hold on for a half-length victory. Twenty Grand was a similar distance away, a length in front of Blazealong, with Scarteen three lengths away next. Success for Sister Polly Durability again had most support in the Oamaru Trot, but after showing promise turning for home, he was unable to make up the little leeway to Sister Polly and Manawai, Sister Polly winning without pressure from Manawai, who was rushed from a rear position to second place during the middle stages. Durability was a close third, a length In front of Scapa Flow and Karu. The Wrecker Returns There were only four starters in the Flying Handicap, and Nightcalm and Gay Parade were the only candidates seriously considered: but The Wrecker, who was making his second appearance, beat them both. Epic took charge early and led into the straight from Gay Parade, Nightcalm, and The Wrecker. Nightcalm and The Wrecker soon drew to the front, and the latter had no trouble in beating Nightcalm. going away. Gay Parade was a fair third, with Epic beaten off. Never in Doubt * St. Cloud was sent out a pronounced favourite for the Farewell Hack Handicap. but was well beaten into third place. Gold Don was first out, and was never in danger of being overhauled. Tantivy followed him ■ into the straight, with St. Cloud and Lord Midas handy, but none of these could make any impression on the leader. Tantivy as easily gained second place from the favourite, with .Queen Beth and Lord Midas well back. This was Gold Don’s second win, his previous being at the Kurow fixture on the same course. Tantivy showed his most encouraging, form since racing for his present owners. St. Cloud probably felt the effects of her hard race the day before, and to her extra weight. Lord Midas again failed to show any of his previous brilliance.

TURF GOSSIP

Thrived on Racing’ Both Twenty Grand and The Wrecker indicated at Oamaru yesterday that plenty of racing does not hurt them. The former ran a close third in the Waitaki Hack, after filling fourth place in the high-weight event, and The Wrecker went one better by winning over seven furlongs after finishing fourth in the principal event. The Wrecker ran one of his best races when he won, and had no trouble in beating Nightcalm, whose apprentice rider was not of much use to him when it came to riding him out. Badly Favoured Knight Commander would have been more prominent in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru yesterday if he had had a better passage during the middle stages. Evidently his inexperienced apprentice rider had been instructed not to be in a hurry to be up with the leaders, as he pulled him about when in a handy position, and was in a rear berth at one stage. He then rushed him up to the leaders rounding the home turn, and it was not surprising that the gelding was done with early in the straight. Not His Form Scarteen was a good way from the leaders turning for home in his race yesterday, but although he won at Wingatui when similarly placed, he failed to finish on on this • occasion. His stable-mate. Ageratum, halfbrother to Night Hawk, sho-wmadt a little improvement by his fourth placing' in the Trial Stakes, and the experience gained by the • southern trip should stand to him'in later racing. Poor Display Good Health was always in last place in the high-weight event at Oamaru yesterday, and has yet to show the form earlier expected of him. Solid Breeding Rosaleen Dhu, winner of the maiden event at Oamaru, is a half-sister to Tommy Dodd, Victory Bond, and Countersign, all good performers. Victory Bond produced Tray Bond, Fair Weather, and Silver Bond, the lastnamed proving a useful performer in Melbourne. Bursary, a three-year-old by Pink Coat from the same mare, recently won a race at a minor meeting in Melbourne for Mr G. Barton. For Trentham

Both Nightcalm and Montessa should benefit from their races at Oamaru yesterday, and are to be nominated for the Wellington meeting. Well-earned Retirement

Silver Streak made his final appearance in public when he contested the Waikouaiti Cup on Monday. He raced over all distances up to two miles in all parts of New Zealand, and proved himself one of the most reliable and consistent gallopers produced in the South Island in recent years. Probably his outstanding performance was the defeat of Defaulter over six furlongs at Wingatui last season. Although troubled by soreness in the last 12 months, he was not actually unsound at any stage, and has retired without ever suffering a breakdown, in spite of his strenuous career.

In Right Order Passenger, now seven years old, has been a long time making good. He has -had plenty of trainers, but F. Christmas, who holds him on lease, appears to have worked a decided change in Him. Well-earned Rest High Glee has been definitely retired from racing, and will in future be used as a hack. He was a most useful stake earner for his breeder, Mr J. A. White. A Costly Check With a’ little luck oh his side Night Dress would have won his second Waikouaiti Cup on Monday. Promising Work Gay Parade was given his first trial over a middle distance in the Waikbuaiti Cup, and shaped encouragingly. He is bred and built on right lines to develop into a stayer, and his future efforts may be confined to such races. A Chance Missed

Twenty Grand was set a severe task in contesting the Waikouaiti Cup and two races liter being , saddled up for the high-weight event. As he was only narrowly beathn in the latter race, his prospect? would have been bright if he had .been kept for, his second engagement. Temporary Lapse

- Lord Midas appears to have lost his early brilliance in the meantime, and His ’racp at Waikouaiti was not any improvement on those at Wingatui.

Great Waitaki was six lengths ahead of King’s Navy and Boreas entering the straight and hung on to win by a length from King’s Navy, who finished well half a length, ahead of Boreas. Garonne stayed on to beat the fast-finishing Queen Linda narrowly, with Lady . Magellan two lengths away. Then came Phil. Queen Linda was unlucky. She was the second to last away and was disappointed in trying for a run on the rails in the straight. The Electric Handicap

Peacock and Philibun led into the straight in the Electric Handicap from Jan Riddv Jed Forest,- and Papernilla. Philibun tired badly and Peacock looked an easy winner halfway down the Straight, but Papernilla finished brilliantly- after a slow beginning aud Peacock won by only half a length. Greymouth Replica, Wainoni Jack, and Waigipnl Girl have been scratched for all engagements at Greymouth. Easy Win for Passaform Sailing Lady and Night Wings were the favourites for the Invercargill Cup, but both failed to finish In the money. When the field had. settled down Sailing Lady had charge from Alma, Mona’s Song, and Wild Career. Spanish Lad Joined Sailing Lady in the lead racing into the back. Sailing Lady was pulling all the way and she was beatert at the home turn, where Mona’s Song took charge and led Spanish Lad, Peony Rose, Alma. Night Wings, and Passaform into the straight. Passaform took charge at the distance and came right away to beat Mona’s Song by two lengths. Peony Rose, who made _ a fast run at the home turn, was three lengths away third, and Merry March fourth. Spanish Lad and Sailing Lady were last to finish. Passaform was last at the half-mile, but over the last furlong he gave nothing else a chance. With pie sting out of the track conditions suited him. ’Mona’s Song beat the others as easily as she was beaten. Sailing Lady stopped badly. Good Beginning Making his first appearance In open company. Spendthrift won the Flying Handicap after a great duel with Nigger Boy. Rodeur and Dark Flight were slow to find their feet and at the end of a furlong Nigger Bov and Spendthrift were racing abreast with Phalanx. Aspire, and Rodeur in close attendance. This was the order at the home turn and Spendthrift shaded Nigger Boy into the straight, with Phalanx and Aspire handy. Nigger Boy appeared to have the upper hand at the distance, but Spendthrift finished, too strongly for him and won by a length and a half. Phalanx was a length away third and Rodeur next. Dark Flight was last. Nigger Boy appeared to strike trouble 100 vards from the post, but at this stage Spendthrift had the result in safe keeping. Boswell, Wins Boswell was backed down to an odds-on price fpr the Walhopai Handicap, and after taking charge with three furlongs to go he won narrowly, but impressively, from Chirp. With half a mile to go Chirp was at the rear of the field and she did particularly well to get within a neck of Boswell, who was hard ridden oyer the last furlong. Boaform was finishing on in third place ahead of Sparkle, who had a bad run. Runaway Victory Ortyx was first out in . the Walklwl Handicap and she was not afterwards headed. She was closely attended by Asia down the back, but Asia lost her position at the far turn. Ortyx was first into the straight from Lochie River, who made a fast run from the back. Gold Robe, Night Pal, and Islay Downs, who was slow away. Ortyx stayed on to win easily by a length and a half from Moonraider, who finished'with a great run from the back. Asia was finishing over the top of everything else in third place ahead of Merry Simon. Dark Flight’s Failure

An explanation into Dark Flight’s poor showing in the Flying Handicap was given to the stipendiary steward. M. N. Caddy, who rode Dark Plight, said that he was unable to go with his field at any stage, while Mr D. M. Tweedle, owner of the horse, said that Dark Flight bled badly during the race and was in a bad way afterwards.
