Levvey, SJI) REMANDED Hector Roy Gourlay was remanded for a week on the charge that at Whangarei he failed to comply with the terms of a maintenance order for the support of his wife and child. Cycling on footpath—Winifred Ethel Wickham, convicted and discharged. CIVIL COURT (Before Mr F. F. Reid, S.MJ EMPLOYMENT OF COOK A penalty was claimed by the Labour Department (Mr S. E. McGregor) from Norman H. Shaw (Mr R. Twyneham licensee of the Grand Hotel, Akaroa. alleging that he had employed a cook for more than 40 hours a week and failed to pay overtime. After , hearing evidence, the Magistrate said : he was satisfied that the cook had; worked nine hours a day and had had, no holidays. He adjourned the case sine die so that arrears owing to the cook could be paid. Mr Twyneham commented on the fact that nine months had elapsed from the time of the offence until the. proceedings were brought. This made it difficult for the defendant to conbat the evidence brought by the department. The Magistrate allowed a penalty of 5s against the cook. Ruby Joli (Mr E.' S. Bowie), for having failed to notify her employer of overtime worked within 48 hours. PRIVATE HOTEL CASE Edith Isobel Sleeman. proprietress of the Ambassadors Hotel (Mr A. C. Brassington) was ordered to pay a penalty of £1 for having failed to pay a worker a uniform allowance. The Magistrate held that technical breaches had also been proved against the defendant in having failed to keep an approved holiday book and to exhibit a copy of the award. He imposed no penalty, however. On a claim of having dismissed a worker without notice and failed to pay two days’ wages on full pay instead, the Magistrate accepted the evidence of the defendant that the dismissal was for an act of insubordination. A civil claim was brought against the same defendant by Betty Florence Swann. She claimed £4 15s 7d as arrears of wages and uniform allowance. Judgment was given for £3 Is. ARREARS OF OVERTIME Civil claims against Hayward Brothers and Company, Ltd., for arrears of overtime for three workers. Thelma J. Farrelly. G. A. Johnson and Madge Phillipson, were brought by the department. Judgment was given for the three plaintiffs for £3 12s. £5 ss. and £3 Is fid respectively. Mr R. J. Loughnan represented the defendant company. PENALTY IMPOSED A penalty of 30s was imposed on Leonard Franklin, a butcher, of 137 ’ High street, for having employed an excessive number of juniors to ado-t workers. Franklin was represented by Mr J. R. Crawford. , DOUBLE TIME NOT PAID For failing to pay two workers double time for work done on Saturdays, Leonard England, a painter and decorator, of Spreydon, was ordered - to pay two penalties totalling £6.
