LEAVE FOR SECOND ECHELON
so tub editor off the press Sir, —It is reported in your Wednesday’s paper that members of tire second echelon of the Special Force may be granted leave over Christmas and New Year, but will not be given free travelling warrants for bout or rail. This makes an invidious distinction between those who live near Christchurch and the West Coast, Nelson, and Southland soldiers, whose custom may be, like other people’s, to return home for this time of year. Free rail warrants are only a matter of simple arrangements between the departments concerned and need cost the Government nothing. But as a taxpayer I would suggest that the whole matter be remedied while there is time, and that parsimony and stupidity make a poor parting gift for Christmas, to those who are prepared to give so much for us.—Yours, etc,. December 14. 1939.
