TURF GOSSIP

A Good. Response The Hdrorata Racing Club has ceived. a very satisfactory list of nominations for its annual race meeting on the Hororata racecourse on December 9, the total being tne saijie as last year. The fixture is one of the most popular in the Canterbury district, and coming as it does two weeks before the holiday racing begins, it attracts widespread interest. Novices at Ashburton

Sham Raid, an acceptor for the Lagmhor Plate at Ashburton to-day, is a three-year-old gelding by Shambles from Bon Raid, and is owned and trained by Mr J. T. Prosser, of Killinchy. Confident, in the same race, is a two-year-old colt by Philamor from Lucy Lockit, dam of Chirp, and is trained by E. J. Ellis for Mr T. M. Kelly, breeder and owner of the pair. Muscatine, also in the Plate, is a two-year-old filly •by Musketoon from Lady Brierly, dam of Master Brierly, Miss Lu, and others. She is also trained by Ellis for her North Island owners, Messrs Bayliss and Findlay (owner of Survey).

Dual Engagements Wine Card and The Wrecker are engaged in both open events at Ashburton to-day. the former start in the Tinwald Handicap, she will be ridden by R. Caddy, who will have a 71b allowance, and if reserved for the Wakanui Handicap, she will have the services of L. J. Ellis. The Wrecker will no doubt contest the Tinwald Handicap, and although he can be expected to make a bold showing, the distance may trouble him. No doubt he and Spartan will act as pacemakers, and the latter may prove the better stayer of the pair.

Apprentices In Control The Apprentices’ Hack Handicap at Ashburton to-day should be one of the most interesting races on _ the programme. Most of the candidates will have the services of experienced apprentices, and with recent good form represented by Merry March, Auctor, Not Out. Dividend. Scold, The Duel. Twenty Grand, and Dinah Dhu. speculation should be widely distributed over the field.

For Sydney Lucullus Lad has gone to Australia and his place with A. Jenkins at Trentham has been taken by a two-year-old filly. Addition, _by The_ Buzzard, who has done a little racing in Australia. Both horses are owned by Mr W. Devon.

Change of Ownership A Press Association cablegram from Melbourne states that the Duke of Kent’s horses, Dhoti, Moonray, and Greenwich, shipped to Australia in advance of the Duke’s anticipated arrival, have been sold, Dhoti to Mr E. R. Underwood, and the others to two clients of Holt’s stables. Centennial Meeting at Trentham

The Wellington Racing Club has gone to considerable pains to make the programme for its centennial summer meeting on January 18, 20, arid 22. 1940, extremely attractive. The outside cover is printed in blue on white paper, with a red border. Surmounting the printing is a badge in red, on oa • half of which is shown a sailing ship being greeted by Maoris, and the other the arrival of a modern steamer. The badge bears the inscription, “New Zealand Centennial,” and, underneath 1840-1940. The programme itself is printed on art paper, and illustrated with six views of the course and the appointments at Trentham. The Wellington Centennial Cup will carry a stake of £3200, including a gold cup, valued . t £2OO, the donation of Mr H. H. Green, a steward of the club. Mr H. P. F. Blundell, another steward, has given a gold cup valued at £75. which will be attached to the Douro Cup. Because the barrier in front of the-stand has been found unsatisfactory for big fields, all mile and a quarter races have been deleted from this programme, the majority being run over a mile and three furlongs.
