OBITUARY

MR ARNAUD MCKELLAR The death occurred yesterday at his home, Park terrace, Christchurch, of ■ Mr. Arnaud McKellar,. a well-known public accountant and businessman, and a former member of the Christchurch City Council and Deputy-Mayor of the city. Born at Timaru in 1876, the son of Mr and Mrs A. A. M. McKellar, he was educated at Christ’s College and had his first experience in business with the Alliance Assurance Company. Then he joined his father as a partner in the firm of A. A. McKellar and Son, public accountants, and he remained one of the principals in the firm until his retirement two years ago. In this time he was associated with many business interests throughout New Zealand, and he was at various times chairman of directors of the Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company, Maling and Company, W. R. Cooke and Son, Ltd., the Mercantile Finance Corporation, New Zealand Electric Steel Works, Ltd., and the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, the last-mentioned a position he relinquished only ■ a few weeks ago. He was also a director of the Mutual Benefit, Building, and Investment Society of Canterbury, Road Surfaces, Ltd., Commerce Buildings, Ltd., Blackball Coal Mines Proprietary, Ltd.', the Christchurch Gas Company, the Perfection Ice Cream Company, and the New Zealand Broadcasting Company. He was a local director, also, of the Southern Cross-Assurance Company. His business ability was of great value to many of these organisations, and he was one of the five men who were called upon to reorganise the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury at a difficult period of that firm s operations some years ago. He was secretary for many years to the Blackball Coal Mines, when this company operated its own fleet of colliers and ships. Elected to the Christchurch City Council during the war, and holding' a seat on the council until 1927, Mr McKellar served the city in many capacities. He was Deputy-Mayor for a time, but some of his most valuable work was as chairman of the

council’s electricity committee. He I was one of those responsible for the T development of the Municipal Electricity Department, a project which I has fully justified his hopes. He was 1 one of those who advocated the Waip makariri hydro-electric scheme as an E independent source of electric power . for the city. At the time of his death i Mr McKellar was one of the city's ■ Sinking Fund Commissioners. He was - also, for many years, a member of . the Christchurch Domains Board. 'As a young man he was a member . of the Christ’s College Rifles. Since , 1932 he had been a Fellow of the I Board of Governors of Christ’s Col- * lege. For some years he was a ' churchwarden of St. Mary's, Meri--3 avle. Mr McKellar's chief sporting f interest was in angling, and he was - a keen fisherman until quite recently. ; He also took an interest in racing, and . was auditor for the Canterbury Jockey [. Club. He was a Justice of the Peace. , Mr McKellar married in 1905 Ann Orr Hay, .daughter of Mr T. O. Hay, ; of Annandale Station, Pigeon Bay. 3 His wife died in 1930, and one son, Mr T. A. Tilling, who was very well known , throughout the Dominion for his work ’ on behalf of the New Zealand South r African War Veterans’ Association. Mr Tilling, who was in his sixties, was i born in England and served in the r South African War as a member of t the Imperial Yeomanry.
