OBITUARY

MRS H. A. ALEXANDRE

The death occurred recently ,of Mrs Harriet Amelia Alexandre, an old and respected resident of Shirley. Mrs Alexandre was born at Jersey, Channel Islands, in 1848, and she was married to Mr Alexandre at St. Saviour’s Church, Jersey, by the Dean

of Jersey. Mr and Mrs Alexandre arrived in New Zealand by the ship Rakaia in 1874, and they were engaged in farming until their retirement. Mrs Alexandre lived for the last 55 years in Shirley. Her husband predeceased her by 16 years, and she is survived by three daughters and three sons. The funeral took place at the Addington Cemetery, the service at the chapel and graveside being conducted by the Rev. J. K, Watson. MASQUERADE DANCE FUNDS FOR QUEEN CARNIVAL The queen carnival organised in aid of the Plunket rooms as New Brighton’s centennial memorial closes today. The campaign will conclude with dances held in the Returned Soldiers’ Hall, in aid of each of the queen candidates, Mrs Leslie 1 Scrimshaw (“blue”), .Miss Joan McKeown .("white”), and Miss Mona Smith ("red”). The committee supervising arrangements for the “blue” candidate arranged a most successful masquerade dance as its final effort.

Winners of competitions were Mr D. M. Purse and Mrs Rattray, and Mr and Mrs S. Bargrove won prizes for the best fancy dresses. „ Music was played by the Jayet orchestra. and extras by Mr H. O. Savage. Mr Leslie Scrimshaw was master of ceremonies.
