DULL POTATO MARKET Business in the local potato' market is still very dull and the quotation of £l3 to farmers is only nominal. It appears that there are still a number of small odd lots held in the country and in the present state of the market these are, proving difficult to quit. The Government has notified "merchants that it requires a monthly return to be made of stocks of seeds held in stores and it is understood that in the meantime the export _ of all but three lines has been prohibited. The three lines excepted are stated to be fescue, browntop, and Suckling clover. Quotations. The president of the North Canterbury Grain, Seed, and Produce Merchants’- Association supplies the following quotations, prices . named being to farmers on trucks at country sidings, unless otherwise indicated;— Wheat—Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan 5s lid;. Hunters 6s Id; Pearl 6s 3d. . (Final payment of 3d a bushel oh all wheat at the end of year.) Oats-^A! Cartons 2s 7d to 2s Bd, B Cartons 2s 4d. Algerians 3s to 3s'6d, Duns 3s 6d to 4s 6d. Partridge, peas are also being sold, but supplies are scarce: Most milling wheat has now been marketed. The potato market remains quiet, but a demand is anticipated within the next few weeks. Other lines show no change. The following are prices quoted to farmers, on trucks at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:— Wheat—Tuscan 5s lid. Hunters 6s Id, Velvet or Pearl 6s 3d, f.o.b. (3d bonus at end of season). Oats—A grade Cartons 2s Bd, B grade 2s 4d, Algerians 3s to 3s 6d, Duns! 3s 6d to 4s 8d (according to quality). Grass Seed—Perennial 5s 3d, Western Wolths and Italian 4s 6d to ss, cocksfoot 6d .lb. white clover Is 6d, red clover 6d to 7d lb. Oatsheaf Chaff —£4 a ton. Partridge Peas—No. 1 grade Bs.* Potatoes—Dakotas and white £l7 for September delivery (nominal). VEGETABLES AND FRUIT CHRISTCHURCH MARKET With the exception of cabbages, which are scarce, good supplies of vegetables are available.

Rilling values are:— Cauliflowers, 3s 6d to 10s a dozen; cabbages, up to 8s 6d a dozen; lettuce, 2s 9d to 8s 6d a dozen; spinach, 3s to 6s 6d a dozen;'celery, 2s 6d to 8s a dozen; rhubarb. 7s 6d to 12s 6d a dozen; sprouts, 4d to 6J per lb; potatoes, up to 7s 6tJ a sugar-bag; onions, best quality up to 12s a sugarbag. Fruit—Apples: Good quality lines are scarce, and values are: Delicious, ,10s to 14s a case; Sturmers, extra choice'up. to- 10s 6d, others 5s to 8s 6d; cooking apples, up to 10s a case. Pears: Dessert varieties, very scarce, up to 7s 6d a half case; cooking, 5s 'to 6s. New Zealand passion fruit: Steady supplies coming forward, realising from 8s to 10s a case.

Imported Fruits—A shipment of Queensland pineapples came to hand during the week, and values were up to 21s a case. A small shipment of Australian oranges arrived yesterday. Shipments Arriving—Further supplies of Queensland pineapples are ex pected next week. Eggs—First grade Is 4Jd, seconds Is 3d to Is 3Jd; duck eggs to Is 5d a dozen. There were approximately 2700 cases in the shipment, and it was quickly taken, up by retailers, but unfortunately some of the cases were found to contain fruit of poor quality and the percentage of loss was heavy.

New Zealand lemons are practically cleared from the marts. A further consignment is due early next week. A small shipment of Australian grape fruit'arrived during the week. This will be the last grape fruit from this quarter for the present season. Apples continue in short supply, and choice quality meet a ready sale.
