SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD At the monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council, there jwere present Councillors W. Gilmour (chairman), J. J. Allen, E. A. Duncan, G. H. Grigg, K. W. J. Hall. T. F. Right, T. E. Pearson, and W. Stone. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport stating that he was recommending to the Minister for Transport (the Hon. B. Semple) that all the metalled roads in the county except the main highways be classified in Class IV, in accordance with the council’s. original proposals. : The council decided that when gorse had to be cut away to enable main races to be cleaned the cost be charged to the occupiers concerned. A full discussion was held on the number of council employees, and it was decided not to take any action in the meantime but to make as full use as possible of the permanent men. An application from Messrs Magnussen and Barlow to lay a 3-inch pipe across Leach’s track was granted, subject to the approval of Mr Godfrey Hall. It was decided that only urgent blacksmithing work should be done at the council forge on Saturdays. The council decided that after the shingling on Whitecliffs road was finished the next jobs to be put in hand would be the patching of Kockwood road from “Shut the Gate” pit and the deviation, at the old Selwyn school. AGRICULTURAL CLUBS ELLESMERE ARRANGEMENTS For the competitions to be held this season by the Ellesmere Boys’ and Girls’ Club, it was reported at a meeting of the controlling committee that the following entries had been received:—Flowers 45, vegetables 41, calves 28, ? lambs 49. The schools taking part are Southbridge, Lakeside, Sedgemere, Leeston, Dunsandel, Killinchy, and Brookside. It was agreed that there should be one judging, in February, for flower plots and blooms, and one judging in December, for vegetables. A show for calves and lambs is to be held at the Ellesmere Show Ground on: December 8. The date fixed for handing in notebooks for calf, lamb, home and kitchen garden projects was November 29, and for flowers, February 15. Mr D. Marshall was thanked for a donation of certified potatoes, and the Soutnbridge School for an oiler of Seedling plants.

AMBULANCE WORK AT KAIAPOI

Fifty members were enrolled. in a first aid class organised by the St. John Ambulance Association, which was held in the Kaiapoi Borough Council Chambers, on Thursday evening. The lecturer was Dr. M. H. Aiken. The Kaiapoi Sub-centre of St. John Ambulance Association has also arranged for first aid classes to be held at Belfast, Tuahiwi, and Oxford.

RED CROSS WORK

BRANCH FORMED AT SOUTHBRIDGE > A public meeting of Southbridge . residents, convened and presided over by Dr. E. W. Hunt, chairman of the Town Board, was held to initiate Red Cross activities in the district. There • was a large attendance, and apologies . were received from several who were unable to attend. The chairman out- ■ lined some of the work that could be ! done by a local organisation, and re- ’ ferred also to the setting up of billet- : ing committees to function in the event ’ of the evacuation of women and childl ren from the cities becoming neces- ■ sary. It was decided to form an organ- : isation, and the following officers and 1 committees were elected: —President, 1 Dr. E. W, Hunt; vice-president, Mr G. B. Couch; secretary, Mrs M. H. Boyd; ; treasurer, Mr D. W. Hayes; executive, : the officers and Mesdames W. V. 1 Rowan, D. W. Hayes, and R. F. Pilk--1 ington; nursing, Mesdames Dugan, A. J. Beamsley, D. Paterson, E. W. Hunt, ■ and F. W. Scott, with the officers; 1 entertainment, Mesdames W. C. Eggelton, and T. H. Bennett, Misses Kilbride and Willis, and Messrs G. B. Couch, T. J. Carter, and H. G. Hubbard. An expression of opinion was sought by the chairman about the setting tp of a central executive for Ellesmere to co-ordinate the work of the various branches. The proposal was approved on the understanding that branches were allowed to control their own funds. The electing of a committee to work with the ‘Women’s Institute in arranging accommodation for refugees in the event of a catastrophe, either in war or by earthquake, was left over for the present. MEETING At BiELFAST There was a large attendance at a public meeting held recently in the local hall to consider the formation of a branch of the Red Cross Society at Belfast. Mr W. T. Rogers occupied the chair. It was unanimously decided that a branch be formed and the following officers were elected;— President, Mrs E. Harris; chairman of executive., Mr S. G. Farquhar; secretary, Mr W. T. Rogers; treasurer, Mr L. Melrose; committee. Mesdames G. Brown, E. Hillier. R. Halligan, E. T. Wilson. E. Thomas, J. Martin, W. T. Rogers, S. G. Farquhar, R. Arnold, J. Murfitt, Misses L. Rogers, J. Henderson, C. Englefield, and B. Rudkin, Messrs G. Brown, E. Hillier, E. Wilson, H. Harris, R. Wilson, and C. Martin; executive committee, Mesdames E. Harris, E. Thomas, and J. .Martin, and Messrs W. T. Rogers, S. G. Farquhar, E. T 'S Wilson, and L. Melrose. It was. decided to start a home nursing class on Tuesday night, September 26, in the Belfast Public Library. Arrangements are being made to form a first-aid class within the next few days. SPRINGFIELD MEETING Arrangements were made to take the home nursing and first-aid courses, at a meeting of the newly-formed Springfield branch of the Red Cross Society. Miss Vaughan presided. Mrs Calvaly, of Arthur’s Pass, agreed to take the classes. Miss M. Dabscheck gave a practical demonstration of bandaging, all members taking part, Sev-, eral members were enrolled. MEETING AT DUNSANDEL ! A public meeting was held in the Town Hall -to consider emergency measures in time of need. Mr R. Buckenham was chairman and Miss Skinner secretary. A committee, consisting of Mesdames G. Gilbert, E. Upston, and K. Happer, Messrs H. W. Johnson and W. . McLachlan, was directed to collect information about the billeting of children and forming of camps, in case of evacuation from the larger, towns; Messrs E. J. Chatterton, R. Buckenham, W. Restall, W. F. Bishop, and J. Garland were elected a transport committee. A gen'eral committee consisting of Mesdames H. A. Brown, E. G. Wright, Frampton, McLachlan, Mackie, M. C. Brown, H. C. Washboume, E. A. Wash-, bourne, Misses W. Mackie, N. Wright and Aldridge, Messrs Owens; Glen, Lloyd, W. N. Walker, E. Upston, Aldridge, cfnd D. Skinner was also elected.

FIRST-AID WORK AT CULVERDEN At a largely attended meeting held in the Presbyterian , Sunday School Fall this week of the Culvertjpn branch of the Red Cross Society, 32 members entered their names for firstaid examinations. Di/. W. G. Todd offered his services as lecturer. Other members not already listed at the Women’s Division meeting recently offered help in case of city, evacuation or other emergencies. The Culverden branch of the Red Cross has kept alive since its inauguration in 1914. RUGBY FOOTBALL CULVERDEN CLUB The following team has been selected to represent Culverden to play against Amberley, at Amberley, to-day, for the Cameron Shield, which is contested, between the two leading teams in the. Baughan at her residence, Selwyn avenue, Akaroa, where the "splendid narcissi bulbs, imported originally from Holland, were greatly admired. Mrs E. Maslen, leader of the Akaroa branch, read two interesting articles on the Nazi methods of training women. After afternoon tea, Mrs Maslen, on behalf of the members, thanked Miss Baughan for the very enjoyable afternoon. , Those present were Miss B. E. Baughan, 1 Mesdames E.' Maslen, C. Dalbeth, J. PRECAUTIONS IN EMERGENCY

PERNSIDE AND SOUTHBROOK MEETINGS

Two further meetings to elect emergency precautions committees were sponsored by the Rangiora County Council at Southbrook and Fernside on Thursday evening, and were attended by about 50 and 40 persons respectively. At the Southbrook meeting Mr; G. H. King (chairman of the council) presided, and with him were Mr J. R. Keeper, member of the council, and Mr H. Ellen (chairman of the Wpodend executive), who acted, as secretary. The Southbrook executive committee elected, member's of which will convene further meetings and set up sub-committees, was;— Messrs D. Mehrtens (chairman), C. M. Archer, W. Atkinson, D. Morris, F. Mclntosh, Mesdames E. Smith, N. Archer, Atkinson, and C. M. Archer. Mr A. M. Carpenter presided at the Fernside meeting, Mr S. G. Dailey (county clerk) explaining details of the emergency precaution plan supplied by the New Zealand Counties’ Association. The executive committee elected was:—, Messrs W. Smith (president of the Fernside branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union), H. E. Evans (chairman of the school committee). Carpenter J. A. Hodges (school), R. Sutherland, H. G. Guy, R. Milliken, who has spent the last three months in Australia, returned home this week. HORORATA The Hororata Girls’ Friendly Society entertained a member, Miss Felton, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Miss M. Maffey, on behalf of members, asked her to accept a -wedding present. HORORATA Mrs H. Yeates is a patient ’in the Christchurch Hospital. Mr and Mrs Haste have taken up residence in Hororata. Miss Betty Orsborne is an inmate of the Christchurch Hospital. ■ Mr and Mrs Pawsey and family, of Springburn, have arrived to live at Hororata. Miss Pearson (Dunedin) has been a guest of Mr and Mrs J. Ballagh, “Hillcrest,” Hororata. Mrs Shipley and Mr F. Shipley (Harewood) have been visitors to Hororata.

Miss N. Foster is spending a holiday in Christchurch.
